Biography[]
Background[]
Abe was born before the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak and had a wife and two sons. He made his way to the Boston quarantine zone and made a living as a clandestine radio operator, allowing civilians in the zone to send messages to loved ones living outside the safety of the wall. Given his work gave people hope, he was well sought after in the zone and held a privileged status.
By 2023, he was on good terms with Joel Miller, a smuggler living in the zone. Knowing Joel's skills, Abe promised the man instant access to his radio and private communication in return for supplies, usually ration cards or contraband cigarettes.[1]
Events of HBO's The Last of Us[]
By the summer of that year, Joel had grown concerned as his brother Tommy had stopped responding to regular messages he sent him. He cut in line, bribing Abe with cigarettes to end the message he was sending for another civilian—Becca—and tell him everything he knew. Abe admitted that, despite his, Gabriela, and his eldest son's efforts, Tommy had not responded to any of their signals. However, he had heard how slavers, raiders, and other hostile survivors had gathered outside the walls and were growing in strength.
Angered, Joel began to leave. Abe warned him that - as capable as he knew Joel to be - even he would struggle to survive if he left the zone to find Tommy. Joel was not deterred, and Abe finally admitted that his last received signal from Tommy came from somewhere in Wyoming, marking it on Joel's map before he left.[1]
Appearance[]
Abe is an older man, with glasses, parted greying hair, and a stubbly beard and mustache. He wears a ruffled tan jacket, a dark buttoned shirt, pants, and shoes.[1]

Abe is a caring man, working a job as a radio operator to ensure he and his family always possess supplies and ration cards. His compassion to allow others access to the radio, one of the rare instances where long-distance communication is still possible, providing hope to survivors desperate to hear from their friends and loved ones.
However, he is also pragmatic, warning Joel that going after his brother would be a suicide mission given how much more dangerous the outside world has become in the absence of law and order and that he should not try to leave the zone.[1]
