Plot

The game opens with the ending of The University chapter in The Last of Us: Ellie and Joel are escaping from the cannibals at the University of Eastern Colorado. The pair ride Callus, only for Joel to succumb to his wound and pass out.

In a flashback to the previous summer, Ellie lives at a military school in Boston. Her friend, Riley, comes in and pretends to be an Infected, playfully biting her neck. Ellie throws her off and threatens her with her switchblade. Realizing it is Riley, she asks why she's in her room. Riley reveals she is now a Firefly, prompting Ellie to check for guards. The pair discuss when they last saw each other and Riley convinces Ellie to go exploring with her, despite Ellie saying she has military drills. Ellie doesn't think it's a good idea, but Riley comforts her, taking her pendant back and remind Ellie they haven't been caught yet.

In the present day, Ellie, Joel and Callus take refuge in an abandoned yogurt store within the Colorado Mountain Plaza. Ellie desperately searches for anything to help treat Joel's wound; she finds some binding and tapes her summer shirt over the wound to stop the bleeding. She decides to venture out to search for supplies, and locks up Joel and Callus in the store.

Back in a Flash

As Ellie walks through the mall, she hears Infected in the distance, causing her to worry briefly. She finds a pharmacy, but it has been completely looted. Ellie notices a back door is locked. She looks through the glass window and sees a first aid kit on the ground. Wanting to take it, she searches for a key. She comes across a note that tells her the combination to the American Princess store next door, and that the pharmacist was locked in there after attacking someone.

Ellie opens up the American Princess store. It is filled with spores, but her immunity protects her. She reaches the back of the store and finds the dead pharmacist. She searches him, finding the key to the pharmacy along with a a picture of a man and a woman.

As she makes her way out of the American Princess, a Clicker passes by. She quickly stabs it in the head with her switchblade, taking a bottle of alcohol it dropped.

Reaching the Helicopter

Ellie returns to the pharmacy and opens the locked door, but discovers the first aid kit is empty. Frustrated, she kicks the case away. She then notices a Blackhawk helicopter has crashed through the roof outside the pharmacy. Hoping to find something there, she heads towards it.

She makes her way through a decimated salon, finding the dead body of a soldier, a note and a health kit. Although the kit is unable to help Joel, she keeps it to use herself.

Ellie exits the salon and descends some stairs. Unable to go any further, she jumps over the railings, declaring "Here we go".
