Well, that's an understatement. I don't want to shit on Naughty Dog entirely though, as a lot went into the game otherwise. If you change up the story though, and cause damage to the fanbase, that's not cool. 2020 is a bomb!

So, no, her character is not ruined but actually whole.
I am not buying the fact that Ellie had good reasons to go after Abby again. She had a choice, she knew that going after again would not do anything for her problems but she did it anyway because why again? Ellie should have stayed with Dina, the game already sent that message. Why make it twice?
You misunderstand. The game is not repeating its message "twice". Rather, it is all part of the same single message that the game's inciting incident (Joel's death) spurred.
It's easy to state the logical thing Ellie should have done when one is detached from her suffering. Of course she is going to pursue Abby again because she is still psychologically scarred by the ordeal. Hell, she has even more reason to pursue Abby now that Tommy is physically broken and emotionally bitter, JJ is fatherless, Jesse is dead and Ellie herself feels immense guilt for now living a near-idyllic life despite all the horror she committed.
It's a smooth parallel as Tommy started wishing to stay and heal in Jackson while Ellie pushed for vengeance only for the pair to switch around with Tommy becoming blood thirsty and Ellie trying to move on. Ellie therefore convinces herself that only killing Abby will bring her mental peace again and end her inability to sleep, eat and accept Joel's demise rather than searching for meaning in her life with Dina and JJ.
Ellie's psyche is further displayed in her journal entries. Evidently, many players didn't even bother to read Ellie's journal entries, which provided the vital background storytelling for players to truly understand Ellie's state of mind.
That's a good message & all but most hated it bc of the execution.
The cycle was already stopped. Why did Ellie go after Abby again when she had Dina and JJ living together? I'm not buying those bullshit excuses like "I can't sleep or eat" because in the first game, she said that her biggest fear is being alone with no one to fight for. Then she just ditches her whole family for a mission she wasn't even gonna accomplish. I mean seriously, what was her exact plan after travelling through all those countries for months alone? So in order to get a vision of a smiling Joel, all she had to do was strangle Abby's neck for a few seconds? You cannot defend this stupid execution. I said EXECUTION!!!
Ok first she traveled through states not countries. Second it's quite apparent that you have no earthly idea what PTSD is or what it entails (not your fault you probably really don't know). Last and probably the most important is the cycle was not broken in Seattle. If you remember correctly Abby not once, but twice granted Ellie mercy not the other way around. Also while we are here did you ever notice the flashbacks that Abby had about her father when walking through hospital especially after killing Joel? They never stopped. If anything they became worse until Abby met Lev and restored what little hope or humanity she had left. Finally when the flashback or dream occured, her father was there (as she rememebered him) smiling. Ellie couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, and was basically a shell of herself. She mad a conscious decision to rid herself from the pain but instead of killing Abby outright, thinking that Abby's death would somehow make her whole, she spared Abby and restored her humanity. That is how the cycle of violence ended. If you want to peg ND for execution because it didn't jibe with your expectations... so be it. It was a story that needed to be told and it doesn't apologize for it and I don't expect it to.
Being unable to eat or sleep is very much a known symptom for many who have struggled with PTSD, which Ellie most definitely has. It isn't bullshit in the slightest. Besides the fact that people change as they grow, trauma can significantly affect people in such a way that a fear she had five years ago isn't going to be the first thought that comes to mind.
As for the cycle of revenge being stopped, it most certainly wasn't finished for Ellie. I really don't need to go into it myself when others have put it better than I can up above. Basically, in terms of what she went through it isn't unreasonable for Ellie, given the state she's in, to go after Abby once more. Also, Ellie held Abby under the water long enough that she nearly drowned her, which was not a few seconds.
Too true Fox. I think the problem with some gamers could very well be their level of immersion or detachment. Also ignorance or lack of knowledge can play a huge factor. From an outside perspective, unless you have had to deal with PTSD personally (and if so you are not alone and never give up the fight) it is hard to be sympathetic or understand truly what Ellie is going through. It's easy to say "well Ellie killed lots of people so why does she have PTSD?" When you're put in a life or death situation where self preservation is your number one instinct (and trust me it is look it up) you will be amazed by what lengths you will go to stay alive. The outcome becomes almost non existent until you are alone and have only your mind to contend with.I'm former military and I can tell you that PTSD in all its forms are no joke but most people, like Dracula here, and the ones I've talked to wanted an Joel and Ellie adventure through the wasteland pt. 2 and when ND didn't deliver they became angry. lt's like ND purposely decided to disenfranchise it's entire fanbase to make a point which is completely false.
Dracula GMAN wrote: I am also done with The Last of Us in general. I did not wait 7 years for a game to subvert my expectations in a very bad way. Naughty Dog is not the same anymore. This is the most 2020 game ever made. Joel dies in the same way as John Connor in Terminator Dark Fate and we were forced to care for new characters, especially the female ones like Abby. There is nothing to look forward in The Last of Us Part 3. They ruined Ellie's character.
Its not Naughty Dog entirely its just rather people in charge like Evan Wells and Neil Druckmann who was on some SJW kool-aid. Heck even the gameplay developers were sick of Neil Druckmann and crunch-time work conditions at ND. Hopefully that changes.
Whatever then. If this franchise refuses to make any sense anymore, then why should I care? I will never forgive Neil Druckmann for lying to my face with his terrible false advertised trailers. There were so many ways for him to execute the story very well but he chose shit. Abby never did anything for me to sympathize with her ass and Lev was just a lazy excuse to do that. TLOU is just nothing special anymore. Whatever is gonna happen with TLOU franchise in the future is not my concern. The HBO adaptation is gonna be an obvious cash grab and it will be hard for a lot of people to get excited for TLOU3 after what they experienced, it doesn't even matter if Ellie is gonna return or not.
As Tony Stark would say, if they are nothing without my support, then they shouldn't have me.
