Dina is a main character in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us. A patrolwoman of the community living in Jackson, Wyoming, she is the free-spirited best friend and love interest of Ellie Williams by 2028, with her devotion to her tested by the brutality of the world they live in.[2][1] Dina later goes on a journey with Ellie to kill Abby Anderson and her friends.[3]
Biography[]
Background[]
Dina was born in 2009, six years after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak ravaged humanity. When she was little, she lived in a cabin in a forest north of Sante Fe with her mother and sister. Although there were scattered families in the area, Dina's family was quite solitary. Dina would become bored as a result, wishing to play outside, but her mother refused.[4]
Dina knew she was bisexual at a young age, and once told her mother that she liked both boys and girls. Her mother replied, "No. You like boys." Wishing to please her mother, Dina assumed a closeted heterosexual life.[5]
When she was 8, Dina rebelled and went outside with a gun for protection. When she returned, Dina encountered her family being harmed by a raider. Dina shot the raider, killing him. Dina's mother and sister eventually died. Dina then made it to Jackson sometime before 2028.[4]
Dina became a member of the Jackson community and was one of their patrolmen by 2028. She used to date Jesse, but they frequently broke up and got together again, as Dina was trying to conform to her mother's homophobia. By December 2028, the pair broke up, with Jesse insisting it was for the final time.[2] She also was somewhat close with Eugene Lynden, talking with him at one point before his death about his time in the Fireflies and how he learned of the WLF in Seattle while with them.[3]

Season 2[]
New Years and losing Joel[]

Dina visiting Joel
On December 31, 2028, Dina was supporting the construction of more housing in the town. Upon finding roots in the pipes (which unbeknownst to her contain live Cordyceps tendrils), she reported it to Joel Miller, their foreman. Joel notes it, apologizing for not being present as he was fixing a circuit. She asks him to teach her how to do it but quickly switches topics to ask why Ellie seems angry with him. Joel responds, leading Dina to realize he has been having therapy sessions with Gail. Embarrassed, Joel asks her not to tell anyone else.

Dina and Ellie on the patrol
Later, Dina visits Ellie at her house to pick her up for their patrol run, helping her get ready. They pick up their horses and guns and are assigned to Kat's group. Jesse orders they follow her orders, the pair playfully accepting. On the trip, Dina teases Ellie about who she may go to the dance with, wondering if she may ask Kat out (as the pair dated previously) but the pair agree to go together. On the way, the patrol spots a blood trail, Dina rushing ahead with Ellie to investigate, finding the aftermath of an infected fight with a now dead bear. Dina cracks a joke about it, which Ellie approves of.

Dina and Ellie at the council meeting
Despite Kat's protests, the pair go into the nearby building the infected fled into. Inside, the coordinate the killing of a clicker but Ellie falls through the floor into the lower levels. By the time Dina reaches her, she has just survived a fight with another infected displaying stalking traits. Later, the pair are placed before the Jackson council to inform them of what they saw and are also reprimanded by Tommy and Maria. Dina lies that she was with Ellie during her fight with the stalker.

Dina and Ellie dancing.
At the New Years dance, Dina dances with several of the men and gets drunk. Spying Ellie by Jesse after a song, she stumbles over and makes Ellie dance with her. The pair flirt on the dance floor, leading to them kissing. However, their affection offends Seth, who mentions it is a family event. Dina apologizes, but he calls the two "dykes". Dina tries to stop Ellie confronting him, but Joel already intervenes, shoving Seth to the ground. Dina then watches as Ellie rebukes Joel for his actions.[2]

Dina and Joel on horseback.
The following day, Dina joins Joel on patrol to the Copper Mine route when Kylie and Max reporting seeing a horde of thirty infected. Upon reaching the mine, they hear a horde of infected attacking the area. Dina stays with the horses while Joel checks the sound. He soon returns with a woman named Abby Anderson he rescued from the horde, barricading the door along the way. The pair struggle to decide where to flee to since they can't fight off a horde when Abby reveals her friends are at a lodge halfway up the mountain. With no other choice, the trio flee on horseback. Halfway there, the horde stops pursuing them to attack Jackson. Fearing for Tommy and Ellie, Joel remarks he has to go back but Dina protests, as does Abby, who assures him her group are armed and will help fight the horde with him.

Dina held hostage by Manny.
They reach the lodge, where Joel leaves Dina in Mel's care while he tries to contact Tommy at Jackson. Dina notices a badge on Mel's backpack with the sign WLF on it. However, the group turn on him while distracted, with Manny taking Dina hostage. He submits, letting Nora take his revolver and tells them to rob him and Dina but leave them alive. However, Abby reveals they are actually ex-Fireflies. Understanding, Joel allows them to render Dina unconscious using anesthesia. While Dina is asleep, Ellie arrives at the lodge and Abby finishes killing Joel. When Dina awakens, she, Ellie and Jesse drag Joel's body back to Jackson.[6]
Journey to Seattle[]

Ellie speaking to Dina in Joel's house.
After returning to Jackson, Dina mourned Joel's death along with many others who had died from an infected horde attack. Despite knowing the names of Joel's killers, the doctors had her swear not to reveal anything about Joel's death for fear of the damage it would do to the traumatized Ellie. Dina obeyed such, not revealing anything despite visiting Ellie frequently during her three months recovering at the hospital from her collapsed lung. She also got back together with Jesse at some point, but found the relationship remaining unsatisfactory as Jesse seemed sad with her.
By April, Dina came to the hospital but learned Ellie had been discharged. She brought cookies she had baked and went to Joel and Ellie's house, waiting for her in the living room. She gave the cookies to her, revealing they were a peace offering as she revealed that she actually knows the names of the group that killed Joel and where they came from. Ellie angrily claims she cost them valuable time in withholding this information, but Dina points out the town was in no shape to send a party to track Joel's killers in the aftermath of the attack, and it would make more sense to track them to their destination after letting them get there. She lays out what she remembers: the two men were Manny and Owen, one of the girls was named Nora and the girl who killed Joel was Abby; the group were wearing patches depicting a wolf's head with the phrase "WLF", which Dina identifies as standing for "Washington Liberation Front", a Seattle-based group of anti-FEDRA fighters that Eugene told her about. She assumes, based on their relative obscurity, that they are a small group, and therefore easy enough for them to handle.
Dina then goes with Ellie to find Tommy, where they reveal the information about the WLF to him. Dina tries to be soft about it, but Ellie reveals her desires to hunt and kill Abby. Dina listens as Tommy consoles Ellie and understands when he threatens her with rendering detail for a month should she hide such vital information from him again. She is then present the following day at the council meeting, sitting with Ellie during her pleas to the council to send the patrolmen to kill Abby. The council vote against it by 8-3, leading Ellie and Dina to walk out from the hall. She later arranges a plan to head to Seattle, meeting with Seth, who agrees to provide them supplies as he supports their cause.
Later, Dina goes to Ellie's garage, interrupting her packing for her solo mission to Seattle. She criticizes her for not asking for her help and being so ill-prepared. She reveals she has already prepared a route they can take, which will take them through the Snoqualmie Pass from which they can approach Seattle from the East. Revealing a packing list, which includes first aid and provisions, she takes stock of Ellie's weapons, warning her to get a proper holster to carry the handgun as opposed to the back of her pants, a scoped rifle, something to keep Shimmer dry, and proper shoes. At the gate, they are met by Seth, whom Ellie angrily realizes was helping Dina prepare. Seth trades Ellie's old rifle for a better one, and briefs them on the supplies he provided before sending them away, with the two sharing a brief handshake before Ellie and Dina depart through the gate. On their way, they stop at the graveyard, where Ellie mourns Joel.

Dina and Ellie going to Seattle.
Ellie and Dina travel to Seattle riding Shimmer, while keeping themselves entertained with travel games, mainly about the music they like. Stopping to camp after a sudden downpour, Dina inquires about their kiss on New Year's Eve. Ellie brushes it off as Dina being high and Ellie herself being drunk, claiming it did not mean anything, but Dina asks how she would rate it. Ellie gives it a "6" on a 1-10 scale, to Dina's disbelief. Dina admits that she and Jesse had reconnected in the months since, and asks if Jesse seems to be "sad", admitting her concern that if he isn't just sad as a person, then perhaps it is her that is making him sad. As Ellie tries to sleep, Dina admits that she wasn't that high.
Their journey through the Snoqualmie Pass is interrupted when they find the dead body of a Seraphites, though neither recognize the symbol on his back. Ellie takes stock of the bullet casings, noting whoever killed him could not have been FEDRA due to different calibres present on the ground. Dina ventures off the path to look around, only to come running back and vomit. Ellie investigates and is horrified to discover the rotting corpses of the rest of the Seraphites, including a girl with her father, whose youth haunts her. They ponder if Abby's crew could have been responsible, noting the barbarity to do such a thing to children. Arriving on the outskirts of Seattle, they find it seemingly quiet, and speculate that fighting the WLF will be no trouble.[3]
Searching for Abby[]
Later in the day, the pair search an abandoned Weston Pharmacy for supplies. While doing so, Dina spots a set of pregnancy tests. Suspecting herself pregnant due to her nausea earlier, she tries five of the tests, which all give a positive result. Taken aback by the confirmation, she returns to Ellie outside, choosing to keep the pregnancy a secret. They ride Shimmer further down the road, encountered rainbow flags and Pride symbols along the way. Lacking knowledge of Seattle's gay community in Capitol Hill from before the outbreak, the pair guess the rainbows were a sign the people living there were optimists. They stop to investigate a disused FEDRA tank surrounded by corpses, Ellie searching the tank while Dina keeps watch.

Dina listening to Ellie's guitar.
In the distance, they spot a TV station with "WLF" marked on it, Dina surmising it to be there base and therefore not a wise move to approach in the daylight. Ellie relents, the pair taking shelter in a nearby abandoned Valiant Music Shop. Dina finds a drum kit and briefly tests it but hears Ellie playing guitar upstairs and goes to join her. She listens as Ellie plays and sings a rendition of "Take On Me" for her, growing emotional at the song as she privately pictures a potential future with Ellie. She compliments her skill afterwards, remarking Joel taught her well. She then heads back downstairs to make beef jerky for them to eat.
By nightfall, the pair make their approach on the TV station, agreeing to kill any WLF soldiers they may encounter once inside. Spying a broken window, they use it to enter the building. However, inside they find the power out and all of the WLF soldiers dead, shot by several arrows and a large group of them hanged and disemboweled from the ceiling, left out on show in the lights. Dina vomits at the sight but recovers soon after. They search the room, realising the Seraphites did this to the WLF and hear from a radio that another squad has been deployed to help. The pair hide as the soldiers burst in, Dina taking the radio.
Eventually, the pair escape, Dina killing a soldier along the way. The flee to a transit subway tunnel where another WLF squad have flanked ahead of them to intercept them. However, the flares the squad use attract an infected horde to their position. With no way out, Ellie and Dina take refuge inside the court-filled train carriages but eventually retreat out the other side as the horde begin breaking in. They manage to make it out but not before an infected nearly bites Dina, Ellie taking the bite for her on the arm.
In shock, Dina follows Ellie to a nearby theater, where she holds her at gunpoint, preparing to execute her as she will be infected. In protest, Ellie reveals she is actually immune to the cordyceps and insists Dina stay up all night to watch her. Dina does so, keeping her gun and flashlight trained on her until Ellie wakes up and reveals (despite several hours having passed) she is still herself. Overcome with relief, Dina reveals she is pregnant and kisses Ellie, their intimacy escalating into the pair have sex.

Dina and Ellie after their night.
By morning, the pair awake and Dina confesses she loves Ellie. She had known for a long time but was unable to reveal it because of how her mother's homophobia impacted her as a child. Their joy together is short lived though as a voice erupts from the radio Dina stole, with a WLF unit revealing the Seraphites had attacked them and they retreated to Lakehill Hospital where Nora is stationed. The pair rush outside to see explosions from the skirmish in the distance. Despite Ellie asking Dina to stay behind, given she is pregnant, Dina refuses, saying they will head out together.[5]
In the lobby of the theater, Dina spends the morning triagnulating the WLF patrols using movements they broadcast on their radio so they can find a safe path to find Nora at the hospital. She eventually summons Ellie to the lobby and shows their route, noting a large building that they can cut through to avoid the patrols. Ellie immediately suspects it is not well-monitored because it is likely filled with infected, but it is their only way to the hospital and to where Nora is. She further questions why the WLF are giving away their positions on the radio, to which Dina speculates the "Scars" are similar to the Amish in that they do not use electricity or technology.
They venture through Seattle, with Ellie asking what Dina will name the baby, to which Dina jokes that she will name it either "Ellie" or "Elijah". They stop when they discover a pile of dead Seraphites, below a mural of their prophet with the phrase "Feel her love." Dina nearly throws up, prompting Ellie to offer to take her back to Jackson, expressing it is wrong to make her continue while she is pregnant. Angered, Dina charges forward while telling Ellie the story of the first person she killed: the raider who had killed her mother and sister in their cabin near Santa Fe. She staunchly asserts to Ellie that she does not care whatever it was that did, he did not deserve to die that way, and Ellie should not have been forced to watch it. Softening, she tells Ellie she will go back if she wants her to, but Ellie decides they will press on.
By nighttime, Ellie and Dina avoid a WLF searchlight as they venture into the warehouse. They find the building seemingly deserted but Dina warns there will probably be at least a few stray infected. She advises that they can only shoot them as a last resort to avoid alerting the WLF, and that if it is between shooting or running they need to run. She also admits that she loves Ellie. They venture inside, but Dina is left uneasy by how utterly quiet it is. Entering a large open room, they are startled by the discovery of a dismembered Seraphite body. They spot an infected hiding from them, which Ellie recognizes as similar to the one that stalked her at the supermarket, warning that the one in the market managed to bite her. At first they decide to flank it, only to realize that there are more of the same kind in the room. As they gradually realize they are surrounded and vastly outnumbered, Ellie comes up with a new plan: Dina hides in a nearby fenced off area while Ellie takes on the infected directly since she can get bit while Dina can't. Dina does so, but eventually rums out of ammunition in her pistol, with the stalkers breaking into the cage. Ellie tries to help but is tackled by a pack of them. Just as the stalker reaches Dina, rifle fire rings out, killing the pack. It is Jesse, who groups up with the pair.
Knowing the WLF would have heard their shots, they flee outside, running from an approaching WLF squad into a park, only to overhear the WLF declare they will not go into the park. The three journey deeper into the park, Jesse revealing he and Tommy left Jackson to pursue the pair. He compliments Dina's map skills, remarking he found and used her notes at the theater to track them. The pair try to rebuff him but he asserts, had he not come, the stalker pack would have killed them. They are interrupted by a series of whistling, which they follow to its source: a group of Seraphites surrounding a captured member of the WLF. As Ellie and Jesse watch in horror while Dina shields her view, a Seraphite Priest has the others lift the man up by a noose before disemboweling him with a sickle. The Seraphites notice the trio and an arrow is launched, striking Dina's leg, immobilizing her. With little choice, Jesse carries Dina back to the theater while Ellie lures the Seraphites away from them.[4]
In the theater, Jesse works to remove the arrow from Dina's leg. She cries with the pain, leading Jesse to offer her alcohol to help but she (to his surprise) refuses it. He comforts her instead, promising he will save her. He then successfully removes the arrow and bandages her wound. He then carries her to the room in the back to let her rest. Later that night, Ellie returns and approaches her. The pair talk, with Dina cleaning Ellie's wounds on her back while the latter explains that she found and tortured Nora. While accepting of Ellie's actions, Dina withdraws when she confesses that Joel had murdered several Fireflies to save her life and prevent a cure five years before; this was the reason Abby and her friends killed him. Dina can only declare that they should leave and return to Jackson before returning to sleep. In the morning, she gives Ellie her hamsa bracelet before she and Jesse depart to find Tommy, remarking it will give her good luck. Unable to walk much, she stays behind and barricades the door behind them and sits atop the balcony keeping watch for their return.
Ellie and Jesse eventually return at night time with Tommy and plan their escape route back to Jackson. She is not present when Abby ambushes them in the reception room.[7]
Physical appearance[]
Dina is a young woman with olive skin, long dark brown hair, and brown eyes. She also wears a hamsa bracelet on her right wrist. When on patrol, she wears a beanie hat, beige overcoat, boots, and holsters for her pistol and knife. At the dance, she wore a red blouse, boots, jeans with a belt and also had her hair tied up.[2]
Personality[]
Dina is a free-wheeling spirit who often cracks jokes, much to the chagrin of Jesse who wants her to be a serious role model. She is also shown to have a curious nature, wanting to learn more about circuit breakers from Joel. A people person, Dina is intuitive, able to understand the growing conflict between Joel and Ellie. She exhibits care for their relationship, offering Ellie to join her and Joel in watching Curtis & Viper films in an effort to get them to be together again. She can even sense how others are feeling, knowing Joel feels lonely and that Ellie has a crush on her.[2] Although, she was not always so sensitive, engaging in bi-erasure by dismissing her kiss with Ellie as nothing but her being high and also challenged her own sexuality, denying that she even found women attractive despite having shared the kiss with Ellie.[3] This trait stemmed from Dina's mother, whose own homophobia led her to deny Dina's own bisexuality when she was a child and consequently made Dina uncertain of who she truly was.[5]
Despite her good will, Dina would not initially respect authority figures. While this could range from harmless banter with Jesse, she could be reckless like Ellie. For instance, the pair made a habit of disobeying orders on patrol to experience the thrill of hunting infected. This even includes when Dina's better judgement convinces her to change her mind, with Ellie's remarks about letting the adult patrolmen kill the clickers being enough for her to change her mind and face the infected.[2] She also had a forthright view about justice, believing brutal torture and murder of a loved one was grounds to hunt and kill anyone that inflicted that pain upon them.[4] Because of this, Dina willingly defied the council's authority and snuck away with Ellie to help her seek vengenace against Joel's killers.[3]
Dina also baked for a hobby, making cookies. She also liked music, notably liking music from Frank Zappa, Guns & Roses and Ozzy Osborne.[3] She was also academically bright, enjoying learning map reading, mathematics and geometry at school.[4]
Relationships[]
Ellie Williams[]

Dina kissing Ellie.
Ellie Williams and Dina became best friends during their time in Jackson.[2] The pair have a habit of rebelling together, notably going off on patrol routes to hunt infected against orders[2] and later leave the community to hunt Joel's killers.[3] The two prove an effective team though, able to non-verbally strategize plans for killing infected and trusting one another's fighting capabilities.[2] Indeed, Dina even saves Ellie's life, killing a WLF soldier who would have shot her otherwise.[5]
Ellie also admires Dina's sense of humor, including her making a pun joke while on patrol. Dina is also able to understand Ellie, noting the rift between her and Joel as being more than what they say and even correctly infers Ellie was attracted to her. Furthermore, Dina expressed loyalty towards Ellie, lying for her to the Jackson council about her encounter with the infected.[2] This was furthered after Joel's death, with Dina visiting Ellie often in the hospital and even pledged her loyalty to her cause to avenge Joel's death; Dina willingly risked journeying to Seattle and facing the WLF to help her.[3]
There was also romantic tension between the pair. Dina had secretly loved Ellie for years but repressed her feelings on her mother's orders because the woman insisted it was not possible for a girl to love another girl.[5] However, Dina had suspicions that Ellie loved her back and convinced her to go to the New Year's dance together in 2029, where their affection for one another turns to intimacy as the pair kiss on the dance floor.[2] However, months later, Dina lied that she was so high at the time that the kiss didn't mean anything to her.[3] In truth though, she had lied because of her mother making her question her sexuality. Dina actually wanted a romantic relationship with Ellie, having grown emotional and smitten when Ellie sang "Take On Me" for her at the music store and even fantasizing of living together and raising a family with her. Therefore, it was only when she feared Ellie was doomed to die from cordyceps that she fully opened up to her, the pair having sex and Dina confessing how deeply she actually loved her.[5] She even began openly expressed her love for Ellie as well and lied to Jesse about her immunity to prevent the man killing her when she was bitten by stalkers.[4]
Jesse[]
Jesse and Dina used to date frequently. However, their relationship was plagued with constant breakups, the pair known to Ellie for always breaking up and getting back together within two weeks. However, by December 2028, both were more conclusive about their breakup, with Jesse openly expressing he and Dina were definitely not getting back together again. Regardless, Dina continued to playfully tease Jesse about her actions on patrol and Jesse cared for her safety.[2] After the infected horde attack, Dina and Jesse got back together again but Dina grew worried about the relationship, expressing that Jesse seemed sad all the time with her, leading her to speculate that she may be the reason for how he behaved.[3] Indeed, Dina personally revealed she did love Jesse but that he wasn't "the one", as she really harbored deeper feelings for Ellie.[5]
Joel Miller[]
Dina had an amiable relationship with Joel, seeing him as someone to learn from. Notably she asked him to teach her how to repair circuit breakers. She also felt comfortable to ask him more personal questions, such as his relationship with Ellie and the fact he was having therapy sessions with Gail. She also accepted his offer to watch Curtis & Viper films with him, even extending the offer to Ellie so the three could watch together. Joel could also be protective of her, shoving Seth to the ground upon hearing the man call Dina and Ellie a pair of "dykes".[2] After the man's death, Dina revealed that she loved him and was willing to join Ellie on her quest to avenge him.[3] She further explained that no matter the reason for Joel's death, he did not deserve to be brutally murdered the way he was, meaning she and Ellie were fully justified in wanting to avenge him.[4]
Quotes[]
- Dina: Oh, Ellie. I think they should be terrified of you.
- Dina: Since everyone's past is fucked, and we've all heard everyone's fucked stories, how do you think this one goes?
Behind the scenes[]

Isabela Merced, the actress who portrays Dina.
- Dina is portrayed by Peruvian-American actress and singer Isabela Merced. Her casting was officially announced by HBO and Naughty Dog on January 11, 2024.[1]
- Before being cast, Merced had watched the first season of the television show but never played the video games.[8] Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann suggested she watch gameplay of The Last of Us Part II on YouTube, but opted to play the game herself,[9] finishing it over a weekend before meeting with the writers.[8] She felt the experience made her more familiar with the sets during production.[10] Merced connected with Dina's light and playful personality, which she felt reflected her own.[11]
- After the first day of filming, she described her on-screen chemistry with Bella Ramsey as "palpable."[12] To get into character, she made a playlist for Dina and Ellie, and often played a song by Adrianne Lenker on set to capture the tone of their relationship.[13]
- While filming the second season, Merced promoted the 2024 films Madame Web, Turtles All the Way Down, and Alien: Romulus,[8][14] and filmed Superman (2025)—a demanding schedule she found challenging but rewarding as a fan of science fiction and superhero genres.[15]
- In the sixth episode of the first season, "Kin", Ellie notices a girl (portrayed by Paolina van Kleef) staring at her from across the dining hall in Jackson and tells her off. Co-creators Mazin and Druckmann confirmed the scene is a reference to Dina's story from The Last of Us Part II about when she first saw Ellie, although they avoided confirming if the character is meant to be Dina.[16]
