Factions is the name given to the online multiplayer mode in The Last of Us.

Overview

"Strength in numbers, Survival of the fittest."

Decades after the initial Cordyceps outbreak, and the decimation of the population, if you're not infected, then you're left fighting for scraps to survive. Unfortunately for you, there are many others like you fighting for the same limited resources, no matter the cost. However, banding together with other survivors gives you the strength in numbers and a better chance of survival. The best and only way to survive is to take the lives of those that seek to take yours. Whether you side with the Fireflies or the Hunters means little. What matters is how hard you try to keep your clan healthy and strong by securing supplies and making it back alive.

Clan

Whilst playing multiplayer matches, players lead a clan of survivors through the world over 12 weeks. Each match played counts as one day, and gives the players opportunities to gather supplies (referred to as "Jimmies" by FireFlies) to fuel the clans progress and growth. At the start of every game, you will be told the target amount of supplies that are needed to keep the clan healthy. Any extra supplies over the amount needed will be used to entice more survivors to join your clan.

TLOU-MP-preview4

Strength in numbers.

Randomly, events will occur that will threaten your people, such as bandit attacks or infections. Clan leaders need to accomplish one task out of a list such as achieve 10 downs over 3 games or kill X enemies with Y weapon. By getting the highest tier of these events, you can minimize the damage done. You may also receive a recruitment event, which will increase the size of your clan by a fixed percent depending on how high a tier of challenge you complete. As more events occur, the challenge of the tiers increases, adding more pressure as the 12 weeks draw on.

In matches, players gather supplies to feed and heal the clan. If the necessary amount of supplies isn't met, survivors will begin to go hungry or get ill and die. Survivors can be healed by meeting the target amount of supplies during each "day".

Facebook Connectivity

Clans can be linked to your Facebook account, allowing your survivors to represent your friends list and profile pictures.  At the end of attacking events, you may be asked to choose between 3 friends to "live". The friend that you don't choose will die. This is purely cosmetic and does not change the gameplay or effects of events or days. Whilst in lobbies or parties, you might see messages of your friends doing activities in the game, such as reinforcing barricades or tending to gardens. These messages reflect how your clan is doing, so if people in your clan are hungry, the messages will inform you.

Every class has 10 loadout points to start out with, and each weapon and survival skill uses up these points. With continued leveling-up, you can unlock more loadout points. Up to the max of 13 points.

Basic Weapons

Small Firearms:

  • 9mm (0 loadout points) level 2 (2 loadout points)
  • Revolver (0 loadout points)
  • Shorty - handheld pistol shotgun (1'''' loadout points) level 2 (3'''' loadout points) [375] points to unlock

In-Game Currencies

Scrap

Scrap acts as the in-game currency that acts as match specific points to purchase ammo, upgrades, armour and weapons. Scrap can be earned by doing various actions in games.

  • Downed Opponent = 100
  • Execution = 50
  • Special Execution = 75
  • Assist =50
  • Marked Opponent = 15
  • Revive = 100
  • Craft item = 30
  • Molotov Kill = 50
  • Bomb Kill = 50
  • Shiv Kill = 75
  • Marked target killed = 25
  • Gift handed to a teammate = 100
  • Heal a teammate = 20/2s (First-Aid Training 2) - 40/2s (First-Aid Training 3)

Additional scrap can be earned by using skill boosters to increase scrap earned such as Collector and Reviver. Scrap does NOT carry over games, but does carry over between lives, so saving up for armor is oftentimes better than buying unnecessary ammunition.

Supplies

Supplies are the main currency needed to sustain your clan in multi-player and changes based on the number of survivors within your clan. Supplies can be gained in game, by collecting bottled containers from the bodies of executed opponents, or by collecting scrap (50 scrap = 1 supplies).  Supplies cannot be spent during rounds, or traded for commodities. Supplies that are left on the ground after executions do not despawn on Supply Raid and will appear on the radar until you pick them up, but do despawn after every round of Survivors.

Health

In-game, each character has 5 bars of health that is non-regenerating. There are many ways to heal.  One method, available to those with first aid training level 2 or 3, is to heal your teammates.  Another method to heal is to craft a med kit. When utilizing it, you are vulnerable to your foes. You can, however, still move while healing yourself. The time it takes to heal varies on how much damage you have suffered. One block of health means a short healing period, while more damage means more time to heal. There's also predetermined spots across each map where health packs are placed. You can also get healed if you hit someone with a melee weapon if you have Brawler 2+ or if you get a headshot with Sharpshooter 2+.

Crafting

In matches, you are able to craft 6 unique items. Like healing, this occurs in real-time, and you are vulnerable while crafting. Unlike healing, you cannot move while you are crafting, and frequently, your character calls out (s)he is crafting and exclaims when (s)he is done, so this actions may expose your position to your foes. You can craft melee upgrades (if you have a melee weapon), a shiv, a health kit, a Molotov cocktail, a shrapnel bomb, or a smoke bomb.

To craft each item, you will need the following:

  • A melee upgrade requires binding and a blade
  • A shiv requires binding and a blade.
  • A health kit requires rag, alcohol and a binding
  • A Molotov requires binding, alcohol, and a rag.
  • A shrapnel bomb requires explosive, sugar, and a blade.
  • A smoke bomb requires explosive and sugar.

The item at the top of the d-pad radial is a gift which can only be obtained through the Crafter skill.

Special Executions

TLOU-MP-preview3

Special executions give extra points, and a more personal goodbye.

After you deal enough damage to an enemy, they become incapacitated and crawl around the ground without the ability to fight. During this time you can press Triangle over them to perform a special execution. These usually last around 3 seconds, and give 50 extra parts. Animations include punching the foe twice with one final wound-up punch, turning their head over and shooting them point-blank with your small or large firearm, and stomping on a foe's head with one more stomp.

If a teammate downs an enemy, you may preform a special execution on him for points and supplies and vice versa. Both players gain supply and ammunition from the one kill this way, giving extra rewards for teamwork among teams to maximize supply gained.

In-Game Store

When you earn a certain number of parts in a match, you can use it to purchase more ammunition for your gun, or potentially buy a better weapon or armor if that option has been assigned in your Loadout. These are instantaneous purchases. It seems that with continued crafting of the same item, its cost continues to increase. It seems that in Survivor mode, since it is round-based, some of the items' costs return to their respective original prices.

Gameplay Modes

Supply Raid

File:TLOU-MP-preview2.png

Supply Raid on "Lakeside"

Supply stashes are usually out in the open and dangerous to approach without teammates, however it contains supplies vital for your team's success and the overall health of your clan. All while being met by an enemy team, fighting for the very same supplies. Each team gets twenty collective lives and whichever team runs out of lives first loses.

Survivors

Survival is the key and teamwork is an optional factor. You must eliminate everyone else until you are left standing at the end of the match. It is a best of seven rounds format and supplies go to the team that wins four of seven rounds by having the last man or woman standing. There's no respawning, but you can buy weapons and ammo between rounds and anything you buy will carry over into the next round, crafted items and materials picked up however will not.
