A fire extinguisher in The Last of Us
Fire extinguishers are an item that can be found in The Last of Us, the DLC Left Behind, and The Last of Us Part II.
Gameplay[]
Fire extinguishers will explode when shot with a firearm or a bow. The explosion creates a cloud of chemical powder that can be used as a smokescreen. The effect is similar to the smoke from a smoke bomb; however, unlike the smoke bomb, the explosion will not stun enemies. Additionally, the explosion does no damage.
A fire extinguisher will not explode when hit with a brick or bottle. However, a fire extinguisher will explode if it is within the effective radius of a Molotov cocktail, nail bomb, or smoke bomb. Additionally, shooting one with an arrow will always result in the arrow being destroyed.
Locations[]
Fire extinguishers can be found in Boston, Pittsburgh, the University of Eastern Colorado, Silver Lake, and Salt Lake City mounted on walls inside of buildings.

"The Quarantine Zone"[]
Six fire extinguishers can be found in the building that Joel and Tess enter after the Boston checkpoint bombing by the Fireflies.
"Pittsburgh"[]
There are a total of twenty fire extinguishers that can be found in Pittsburgh. The first fire extinguisher encountered is located in the building Joel crashes the truck into; the second is in an open building across the street. Five fire extinguishers can be found in the Kingston Bookstore; four on the first floor and one upstairs near the Rivers Cafe. In the Hotel Grand, there are eight: four upstairs where the hunters are, three in the basement with the infected and one in a kitchen that Joel enters after escaping the basement. In the financial district, there are five fire extinguishers: four can be found in the area where Ellie covers Joel with a hunting rifle, and one upstairs in the building entered immediately after that sequence.
"The University"[]
There are three fire extinguishers that can be found mounted on walls in the science building of the University of Eastern Colorado. One on the second floor near the stairwell, and two on the third floor in the hallway.
"Lakeside Resort"[]
There are two fire extinguishers that can be found in David's town. Both can be found in buildings immediately after Ellie escapes from David. The first is found in a pet store and the second is in the building next door.
"The Firefly Lab"[]
In Salt Lake City, five fire extinguishers can be found in the hallways of St. Mary's Hospital. There are three on the fourth floor and two on the sixth.
Left Behind[]
In the chapter "Mallrats", there are three fire extinguishers that can be found in the building that Ellie and Riley jump into to avoid a patrol of soldiers. There are none to be found in either of the malls explored in the DLC.
Factions Multiplayer[]
Fire extinguishers can be found on the Factions MP map Checkpoint. Several can be found in the Garden building and several more can be found across the map in the 22 Engine Company Firehouse. These fire extinguishers appear identical to those found in the singleplayer mode; however, these cannot be detonated. They function merely as decorative set pieces and have no impact on gameplay.

Trivia[]
- If a fire extinguisher is detonated before a cinematic, the fire extinguisher will be restored to its original state after the cinematic ends. Notably, this occurs in the financial district in Pittsburgh in the area where Ellie uses a hunting rifle to provides cover for Joel.
- In the basement of the Hotel Grand, there are many fire extinguisher cases mounted on the walls, but all of them are empty. The fire extinguishers in this area are all mounted on the walls outside of the cases.
