Firearms are projectile weapons that fire ammunition such as bullets at a target. They are the most powerful and highly sought weapons in The Last of Us, The Last of Us: Left Behind and The Last of Us Part II.

Ammunition for them is scarce and the player can only carry a small amount of ammunition, making conservation challenging. Firearms are divided into 2 groups inventory wise Long Guns and Pistols.

The Long Guns category pertains to guns that require the user to have one hand on the pistol grip or stock and the other on the handguard or grip to use. This group also includes bows and flamethrowers. They are superior to pistols in terms of range and damage but inferior in terms of handling and draw speed.

The Pistols category pertains to guns that require the player to have both hands on the grip to use. They are superior to long guns in terms of handling and drawing speed but inferior in terms of range and damage. Pistols can be used to use hostile survivors as living shields. 

Both categories of weapons can be upgraded at a workbench requiring a certain amount of parts for each upgrade as well as a tools level for the first game.
