Florence is a supporting character in the first season of HBO's The Last of Us. She is a survivor living alone with her husband, Marlon, in the wilderness of post-apocalyptic Wyoming.[1]
Biography[]
Background[]
Florence was a survivor of the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak. She married her husband Marlon at some point and lived with him near Cody, Wyoming. At Marlon's insistence, he and Florence left their home and set up residence in the wilderness, living off the land in a small cabin near the Yellowstone River. Their remote location allowed them to survive the outbreak and avoid being sent to a quarantine zone by FEDRA. Florence let Marlon take care of the hunting, tending to the cabin whenever he was out.
In time, Marlon and Florence realized another group was living across the river but never risked visiting them, believing they were hostile given that they often found corpses—infected and human—left by the riverbank.[2]
Events of HBO's The Last of Us[]
In the winter of 2023, when Marlon went out hunting, Florence was surprised by a man and a teenager girl, holding her at gunpoint. Florence made them soup and used a map to tell him where they were located.
Some time later, Marlon returned from hunting. Marlon queried her as to why she had not tried to kill the man and girl, Florence responded she did not have her gun near her when they arrived, it being on the other side of the room. The man then insisted Marlon tell them where they were on the map, and that it had better match the spot his wife had indicated. Marlon asked Florence if she had told him the truth, to which Florence replied she did. Marlon then pointed to the same place Florence pointed to. Florence and Marlon then told the two intruders about a supposed hostile group living across the river and how Cody had fallen to infected. Although the girl claimed they were not scared by their predicament, Florence said she believed the man was. The man and girl then left, leaving Marlon and Florence to continue living in isolation.[2]
Appearance[]
Florence was an older Native American woman with graying hair. She wore winter clothing, consisting of reds and purples.[2]
Personality[]
Florence had a careless nature, leaving herself unarmed in the wilderness, making it easy for people to intrude on her home. She did not appear phased by this reality, nonchalantly dismissing efforts at interrogation and instead was open and honest when held at gunpoint.[2]
Relationships[]
Marlon[]
Florence was Marlon's wife and trusted him to care for her in the post-apocalypse, leaving her home near Cody to follow his idea of living an isolated life in the wilderness. The pair had a trusting relationship, believing one another absolutely.[2]
