2024[]
[Beginning where "Look for the Light" ended, Joel Miller and Ellie Williams stand on a hillside above Jackson.]
Ellie: Swear to me that everything you said about the Fireflies is true.
Joel: I swear.
Ellie: Okay.
[Ellie starts down the hill toward Jackson. After a moment, Joel follows. Cut to Salt Lake City. Giraffes graze in an abandoned baseball field. Abby watches them from a line of trees, beside many fresh graves marked with Firefly pendants.]
Manny: Why would he do this?
Nora: I heard rumors. It was some kid he took that was supposedly--
Mel: That wasn't true.
Manny: Supposedly what?
Mel: Something not true. Because it isn't possible.
Nora: No. Probably not. And even if it were, it doesn't fucking matter anyway.
'Mel: Not without--
Owen: Enough. You want to worry about something, worry about us.
Mel: So, what do we do? Do we look for other Fireflies?
Manny: Where? This place was the Fireflies.
Owen: Ed has a brother who runs an outfit in Seattle. A guy named Isaac. Supposedly, he'd take us all in.
Abby: Not until we find Joel. We're finding him. Yes, we are. Yes, we are.
Owen: All right, let's talk about how. Because here's what we got. He's a smuggler. His name's Joel, or Joe. There's some confusion about that--
Abby: Fifties, graying, beard, six foot tall, scar on his right temple. Oh, yeah. They say he's handsome. I forgot. With a three-day jump on us. We should have gone right after him.
Owen: He drove away, Abby. In our only working vehicle.
Mel: And we were trying to save the wounded.
Abby: But we didn't save anyone, did we?
Nora: That's not fucking fair.
Abby: No. None of this is fucking fair.
Owen: Abby. Maybe... maybe the Seattle crew has resources. They could help us get some sort of lead.
Abby: You'll help me find him.
Owen: Yes. We'll help you find him. Then, we'll help you kill him.
Abby: Slowly.
Owen: What?
Abby: When we kill him, we kill him slowly.
[Opening theme plays]
5 years later[]
[Ellie is knocked to the ground, her nose bloodied, in the middle of a fight.]
Caleb: Get up.
[Ellie gets to her feet and charges Caleb, but makes little headway as he's much larger. Caleb throws her to the ground again, and pins her down. As he draws back to throw a punch, Ellie manages to lever her legs around his neck, choking him. She wrestles him down, pinning an arm behind his back until he taps out.]
Jesse: Okay. Okay.
[Ellie doesn't release Caleb, who continues to bang the floor to end the fight.]
Jesse: Ellie!
[Ellie finally relents, and pats Caleb on the back.]
Ellie: Boom, motherfucker.
Jesse: First of all, "okay" means stop.
Ellie: Sorry, I was in the moment.
Jesse: Second, you can't "Boom, motherfucker" people who land the first hit on you. Square in the face, by the way.
Ellie: Well, I can obviously take a punch, so who cares? Fuckin' hard, by the way.
Caleb: I pulled it.
Ellie: You-- you pulled it?
Jesse: Yeah, he pulled it.
Ellie: Why?
Jesse: 'Cause I told him to.
Ellie: Why?
Jesse: Otherwise, he would have knocked you out, and I don't want to have to explain that to Joel.
Ellie: Don't do that again.
Jesse: Okay.
Ellie: I should've closed in faster on that one, but the rest was good.
Jesse: The rest was good. You, uh, are you going to the thing tonight?
Ellie: Don't we have to? 'Cause community and shit?
Jesse: Oh, you're part of the community now? [Caleb laughs]
Jesse: Seriously, though, if you are, we could use an extra pair of hands breaking down firewood for the cookout.
Ellie: Don't pull punches.
[Ellie exits the barn and heads down the street into Jackson. Elsewhere in town, a construction crew is working to refurbish an abandoned house. They break open a clay water main, finding it entirely bound with roots.]
Dina: Oh. Well, that's fucked.
[Inside, Joel is at a table, repairing a breaker box]
Dina: Hey.
Joel: Hey, kiddo. Somethin' go wrong out there?
Dina: Well, uh, the main lines are clay. All cracked to shit and full of roots. We're not sure what we're supposed to do, and our foreman isn't foreman-ing.
Joel: Oh. Yeah, sorry. I'll be out there in a minute.
Dina: Whatcha doin'?
Joel: Fixing these breakers. They were gonna chuck the whole panel, but all they need is new springs.
Dina: Teach me?
Joel: Okay. Uh, well... First thing first, before you mess with circuits, you gotta check if the wires are live. So, how do you do that?
Dina: I... lick them?
Joel: Voltage tester. Now, this right here is the part that matters. Bimetallic strip. Too much current runs through, heats up the strip, it bends, releases the lever. Circuit breaks. Otherwise, the wires get hotter and hotter, lights the inside of your walls on fire. There goes your house.
Dina: Can I ask a question?
Joel: Shoot.
Dina: Why is she angry at you?
Joel: She said she was angry?
Dina: No, but...
Joel: You're her best friend, reckon she would have told you.
Dina: Nope.
Joel: Well, I figure it's normal. Her being nineteen and me being her... what I am. No one likes their parents at that age. I never got there with my own kid, so we're both just figuring it out for the first time, is all. We'll get through it.
Dina: Yeah, that makes sense. So, the springs hold the levers back--
Joel: -- The thing is, I try. I know I'm a hard-ass, and maybe overprotective, and she's... her, but... I mean, what did I do?
Dina: I don't know.
Joel: Yeah, well... I can't hold myself responsible for another person's emotional state.
Dina: Are you in fucking therapy? Holy shit, are you seeing Gail?
Joel: I'm not in therapy. Jesus, go... go fix the main line. Saw out the cracked parts, pull the roots, and we'll fill in the gaps with some ABS. Go on.
Dina: It'll be okay.
Joel: Dina. Don't tell anyone I'm in therapy.
