Doctor Gerald Anderson[fn 1] is a minor character in the first season and mentioned in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us.
Biography[]
Background[]
In 2004 or 2005, Gerald fathered a girl named Abby Anderson not long after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak.
By 2024, he was stationed at St. Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, working as the head surgeon for Marlene and the Fireflies. Marlene believed Ellie Williams, the daughter of her late friend Anna, was the key to creating a vaccine against the Cordyceps infection.
Events of HBO's The Last of Us[]
Season 1[]
During January of 2024, the Fireflies found Ellie—the girl immune to the Cordyceps infection—and Joel Miller, the smuggler tasked with escorting her out of the Boston QZ, near their St. Mary's Hospital outpost. After bringing them to the hospital, Gerald examined Ellie and speculated that the Cordyceps in her system had been present since birth. He concluded that in order to develop a vaccine, he would need to remove the infected tissue from her brain and attempt to multiply the cells in a lab—an operation that would inevitably kill her. Gerald, along with three nurses, promptly began preparing Ellie for surgery, placing her under anesthesia.

Gerald shot in the head by Joel.
After learning this from Marlene, Joel massacred eighteen Fireflies in order to rescue Ellie. Upon reaching the operating room as the surgical team was preparing to operate, Joel demanded that they unhook Ellie. Gerald attempted to threaten him with a scalpel, but Joel shot him in the head with a pistol, prompting the nurses to comply in fear.[1]
His body was later discovered by his daughter Abby, who was overcome with grief and shock at the gore of the scene.[2]
Season 2[]
On New Years Day 2029, Abby and her friends make their way to Jackson, Wyoming, to exact revenge on Joel for her father's death. Upon capturing Joel, Abby interrogated him about the events of Salt Lake City. She revealed to him that her father was the head surgeon he killed.[2]
