Prologue[]
[The cinematic "Goodnight, baby girl" begins. "Sony Computer Entertainment presents" and "a Naughty Dog game" slides flash on screen. Sarah Miller sleeps on the couch at her home in Austin, Texas. The camera shifts to the front door where her father Joel enters, talking to his brother, Tommy, on the phone.]
Joel: Tommy I—Tommy, Tommy listen to me, he is the contractor. He's the contractor, okay? I can't lose this job. I understand…
[The camera shifts back to Sarah waking up.]
Joel: Let's talk about this in the morning, okay? [Joel turns on a light and Sarah yawns.] We'll talk about it in the morning. All right, goodnight.
[Sarah sits up on the couch.]
Sarah: Hey.
Joel: Scoot.
[Sarah moves over. Joel sits next to her.]
Sarah: Fun day at work, huh?
Joel: What are you still doing up? It's late.
[Sarah looks up at the clock. It reads 11:40 PM.]
Sarah: Oh, crud. What time is it?
Joel: It's way past your bedtime.
Sarah: But it's still today.
[Sarah grabs a small box beside the couch.]
Joel: Honey, please not right now. I do not have the energy for this.
[Sarah stands up and hands the small box to Joel.]
Sarah: Here.
Joel: What's this? [He grabs the box.]
Sarah: Your birthday.
[Joel opens the box. Inside is a watch.]
Sarah: You kept complaining about your broken watch… So I figured, you know… [Joel puts the watch on his wrist] You like it?
Joel: Honey, this is… [He holds the watch to his ear, then puts it back down.]
Sarah: What?
Joel: It's nice but I—I think it's stuck. It's not—
Sarah: What? [Worried, she grabs Joel's arm to get a closer view of the watch.] No, no, no, no. [As she looks, she finds the watch is ticking fine. It was all a joke by Joel. She pushes his arm away.] Oh, ha, ha.
Joel: Where did you get the money for this?
Sarah: [Sarcastically] Drugs. I sell hardcore drugs.
Joel: Oh, good. [Joel grabs the TV remote from the table in front of him.] You can start helping out with the mortgage then.
Sarah: Stsh—yeah, you wish.
[Joel turns on the TV. He and Sarah then start watching TV. After some time, Sarah falls asleep. Music starts to play as Joel picks up Sarah and carries her to her room. Joel then puts Sarah in her bed.]
Joel: Goodnight, baby girl.
[Joel leaves her room and the camera cuts to black. The cinematic "Goodnight, baby girl" ends. Almost two hours later, Sarah is awakened to her bedside phone ringing. She picks it up and answers.]
Sarah: Hello?
Tommy: [Over the phone] Sarah, honey, I need you to get your daddy on the phone.
Sarah: Uncle Tommy, what time is it?
Tommy: I need to talk to your dad now. There's some—
Sarah: [The phone call suddenly disconnects.] Uncle Tommy? Hello?
[Sarah hangs the phone up and stands up out of bed. The player is now controlling Sarah.]
Sarah: What was that all about?
[If Sarah attempts to pick up the phone again, she will hear nothing but the disconnect tone.]
Sarah: [Sighs] Phone's dead. [Hangs the phone back up.]
[Sarah walks around her room. She can interact with a birthday card on her dresser, which she got for Joel.]
Sarah: Ah, dang it. I forgot to give this to him. [Opens the birthday card before putting it back down.]
[Sarah opens her bedroom door and walks out into the hallway.]
Sarah: Dad? [She continues down the hallway.] Daddy?
[Sarah opens the door to Joel's bedroom. No one is in there, but the television is on playing a news broadcast onscreen. Rose Graham, reporting for KATX Channel 2 News in the streets of inner city Austin, speaks to the camera.]
Rose: It appears that what we initially reported as riots…
Sarah: [Calls out for Joel] You in here?
Rose: …seem to be somehow connected to the nationwide pandemic.
Sarah: Where the heck are you?
Rose: We've received reports that victims afflicted with the infection show signs of increased aggression and—
Sarah: [Responding to the TV] That's nearby.
[On the TV, a U.S. military soldier suddenly interrupts the broadcast.]
Male soldier: We need to move everybody out of here now. There's a gas leak. Hey—move! Get out of here!
Rose: There seems to be some commotion coming from beh—
Male soldier: [To Rose] Lady, get the hell outta here right—
[The gas leak causes an explosion in the distance, suddenly cutting off the broadcast. The TV loses connection and dogs begin barking in the background.]
Sarah: Uh… what was that?
[The player is then prompted to press . Sarah looks out the window and a second explosion goes off within the city.]
Sarah: [Frightened] Dad? [Walks out of Joel's bedroom.] Dad?! [Descends the stairs] What is goin' on?
[Three police cars drive by the front window. Sarah continues through the house, entering the kitchen. She notices Joel's phone vibrating on the counter.]
Sarah: There's his phone.
[Sarah approaches his phone and picks it up, reading the notifications, all of which are from Tommy.]
Sarah: [Reading the phone] 8 missed calls. "Where the hell are you? Call me." "On my way."
[Sarah puts the phone down and reads a note on the fridge left by Joel, informing her he's going to be home late and to order food for herself.]
Sarah: Where is he?
[She starts walking towards Joel's office and hears a nearby dog yelp outside, startling her. She opens the door to the office and suddenly sees Joel run in from outside. He quickly shuts the glass sliding door behind him.]
Sarah: There you are.
Joel: [Looks at Sarah] Sarah. Are you okay?
Sarah: Yeah.
[Joel turns to his desk and pulls a box out from the drawer.]
Joel: Has anyone come in here? [He opens the box. Inside is a revolver.]
Sarah: No. Who would come in here?
Joel: Don't go near the doors. Just… [Starts loading the revolver] Just stand back there…
Sarah: Dad, you're kinda freaking me out. What's going on?
Joel: It's the Coopers. Somethin' ain't right with 'em. I think they're sick.
Sarah: What kinda sick?
[Suddenly, Jimmy Cooper, the Millers' neighbor, slams into the sliding door from outside, startling the two. Jimmy, clearly infected with the Cordyceps brain infection, is snarling and groaning.]
Joel: Jesus. Jimmy!
Sarah: Dad?
Joel: Honey, c'mere, c'mere. [He pulls Sarah behind him, wielding his revolver.]
Sarah: [Mutters to herself] It's okay… [Jimmy continues to slam into the door.]
Joel: Jimmy. [Jimmy breaks through the glass and falls to the ground.] Jimmy, just stay back. [Jimmy gets up and turns to them] Jimmy, I am warning you.
Sarah: Oh, my God…
Joel: [Jimmy sprints towards them] Don't! [Joel shoots Jimmy once, killing him. He speaks to Sarah] Go. Go.
[Joel pulls Sarah by the arm out of his office and into the dining room. He grabs her by the shoulders.]
Sarah: [Disbelief] You… you shot him…
Joel: Sarah.
Sarah: [Breathing shakily] I saw him this mornin'.
Joel: Listen to me, there is something bad going on. We have got to get outta here. Do you understand me?
Sarah: [Sniffles and nods] Yeah.
[Car lights can be seen shining through the front window.]
Joel: Tommy. C'mon. [He grabs Sarah by the hand and hurriedly heads for the front door.] C'mon.
Sarah: [Follows] Okay.
[They exit through the front door and in the driveway is Tommy in his truck. He gets out and approaches the pair.]
Tommy: Where the hell you been? You have any idea what's goin' on out there?
Joel: I got some notion. [Pulls Sarah towards the truck and opens the back door.]
Tommy: Holy shit. You got blood all over you.
Joel: [To Sarah] C'mon, baby. Go on in there. [Sarah climbs into the backseat. To Tommy] It ain't mine. Let's just get outta here.
Tommy: They're saying that half the people in the city have lost their minds.
Joel: Can we please just go? [Enters the passenger side.]
Tommy: Some sort of parasite or something. [Gets into the driver's seat] You gonna tell me what happened?
Joel: Later.
Tommy: [Looks back] Hey, Sarah. How you holdin' up, honey? [Reverses out of the driveway.]
Sarah: I'm fine. Can we hear what's on the radio?
Tommy: Yeah, sure thing. [Begins driving on the road.]
Sarah: Thanks.
[Tommy flips through the radio stations, only to receive no signal.]
Tommy: No cellphone. No radio. Yeah, we're doin' great. Minute ago, newsman wouldn't shut up.
Joel: They say where to go?
Tommy: They said, uh… Army's puttin' up road blocks on the highway. No gettin' into Travis County.
Joel: That means we need to get the hell out. Take 71.
Tommy: 71, that's where I'm headed.
[They arrive at an intersection where a police car drives by. Tommy turns right.]
Sarah: Did they say how many are dead?
Tommy: Probably a lot. They found this one family all mangled inside their house.
Joel: [Sternly] Tommy.
Tommy: Right. Sorry.
[They continue driving and pass a car that has crashed into a telephone pole.]
Joel: Jesus Christ, how did this happen?
Tommy: They got no clue. But we ain't the only town. At first they were saying it was just the South. Now they're going on about the East Coast, the West Coast…
[Tommy notices a burning farmhouse just up the road.]
Tommy: Holy hell. That's Louis' farm. [They drive past] I hope that son of a bitch made it out.
Joel: I'm sure he did.
Sarah: Are we sick?
Joel: [Looks at Sarah] No. No, of course not.
Sarah: How do you know?
Tommy: They said it's just, uh, people in the city. We're good. [Turns right at an intersection.]
Sarah: Didn't Jimmy work in the city?
Joel: That's right, he did. We're fine. Trust me.
Sarah: All right.
[Tommy spots a father and mother with their child walking along the road.]
Tommy: Let's see what they need [He starts slowing the truck down.]
Joel: What the hell do you think you're doin'? Keep drivin'.
Tommy: They got a kid, Joel.
Joel: So do we.
Sarah: But we have room.
[The father of the family notices their truck. He waves his arms and steps onto the road.]
Male civilian: Hey! Hey, stop!
Joel: Keep drivin', Tommy.
Male civilian: Stop!
[Tommy accelerates and continues driving.]
Joel: You ain't seen what I seen. Someone else'll come along.
Sarah: [Softly] We shoulda helped them.
[They start to approach Highway 71 as an ambulance drives past them. When they arrive, it is congested due to traffic. A helicopter flies over.]
Tommy: Oh, this is bad. Everyone and their mother had the same damn idea.
Joel: Well… we could just backtrack and—
[The driver of the car in front of them gets out of their vehicle.]
Male civilian: [To the car in front of him] Hey, what the fuck, man? Let's go!
[A runner runs up from the left and starts attacking the man.]
Joel: Holy shit. Turn us around.
[A second runner starts attacking the woman in the man's passenger seat.]
Sarah: Oh, my God.
Female civilian: [Screaming] Get away!
Joel: Tommy. [Shakes Tommy's shoulder] Tommy!
[Tommy, stricken with shock, is brought back to reality thanks to Joel.]
Tommy: Holy shit.
[He puts the truck in reverse and backs up as the runner chases after them and slams on the backseat window. Tommy quickly drives off onto another street.]
Tommy: What the fuck just happened? What the fuck just happened—did you see that?
Joel: Yes, I saw it.
Tommy: Goddamn.
Joel: Turn here. [Points to the left] Turn here.
[Tommy turns to find an RV obstructing the road as civilians run scared through the street. He slows the truck down.]
Tommy: Come on people. Move.
Joel: No, no, no, no, no…
Sarah: What are they runnin' from?
Joel: [To Tommy] Get us outta here.
Tommy: I'm tryin'.
[A civilian bumps into the truck, causing Tommy to hit the brakes.]
Sarah: Oh no.
Joel: We can't stop here, Tommy.
Tommy: [Yells] I can't fuckin' drive through 'em, Joel!
Joel: Then back up then!
Tommy: They're behind me too!
Joel: There. [Points to an opening] There! There!
Tommy: Hold on!
Joel: Go!
[Tommy successfully maneuvers through the opening and approaches an intersection. As they pass through, Sarah looks to the left and calls out.]
Sarah: Look out!
[A car crashes into the side of the truck. The truck flips over and the screen cuts to black. It cuts back to reveal an unconscious Joel lying inside the overturned truck. Sarah wakes up behind him.]
Sarah: [Sits up] Daddy? [Looks at Joel and shakes his shoulder] Hey. Hey.
Joel: [Regaining consciousness] What?
[He opens his eyes and looks around. He sees civilians running for their lives as a runner attacks the passenger of the car that crashed into them. He looks back at Sarah]
Joel: Get back, baby. Get back.
Sarah: [She complies and whispers] Look, I'm okay…
[Joel starts kicking out the windshield of the truck. The player is required to press three times to kick it out. He slowly climbs out as civilians continue to run in fear. Joel stands up and gets attacked by a runner. Resisting, Tommy comes to his rescue and knocks the runner out by striking it with a brick. They glance at each other.]
Sarah: Dad?
Joel: [Faces Sarah] I'm here, baby. I'm here. [Holds his hand out] Come on, gimme your hand.
[Sarah grabs him by the hand as he helps her to her feet. She whimpers in pain and limps as Joel keeps her balanced.]
Joel: What is it?
Sarah: My leg hurts.
Joel: How bad?
[The camera cuts to Tommy, looking off into the distance.]
Sarah: Pretty bad.
Tommy: [Interrupts] We're gonna need to run.
Joel: [Looks in the same direction] Oh, my God. [Pulls his revolver out from his back pocket and hands it to Tommy] You keep us safe. [To Sarah] Come on, baby. [Joel picks her up and carries her in his arms.] Now hold on tight.
Sarah: Okay.
[The player now controls Joel as he carries Sarah through the streets of Austin, Tommy leads the way. Civilians desperately run away as infected attack them and chase the player.]
Sarah: Daddy, I'm scared.
Joel: Just keep your eyes closed, honey!
[A runner tackles a man to the ground in front of Tommy.]
Tommy: [Backs away] Joel, watch out!
[The three continue running down the street as a car speeds out of control towards the nearby Texan gas station.]
Sarah: [Gasps] Oh my— [It crashes into the fuel pumps, causing a huge explosion.] Oh, my God…
[They cower from the explosion. Tommy turns to check on the pair.]
Tommy: Keep running!
[Tommy signals the two to continue moving as they turn right onto the next street. On the left side is a burning building with people, on fire, running out of it.]
Sarah: Those people are on fire.
Joel: Don't look, Sarah.
Sarah: Okay.
[They come to a firetruck parked on the road. Tommy looks both directions and points to an opening on the right side.]
Tommy: Over there!
[As they pass through, two cars crash into each other nearby, knocking civilians over.]
Joel: We're gonna get outta this. I promise.
[They keep running down the street. In front of them is a movie theater with a police barricade set up outside, as officers wave civilians into different directions. A car on fire rolls in from the street behind them and crashes into a parked car, causing an explosion.]
Tommy: Get back! There's too many of 'em. [He waves to the left] This way! Through the alley!
[They enter the alley as Tommy opens a fence gate, holding it open for Joel and Sarah.]
Tommy: Go!
[As Joel heads down the alley, a nearby runner attempts to attack him as Joel holds him back. Tommy kicks the runner down onto the ground and shoots it once in the head with the revolver.]
Joel: [Whispers] Jesus.
Tommy: He's dead! Goddammit.
Joel: We're almost there. We're almost there, baby.
[As they continue down the alley, several runners attempt to break through a fence. One begins to crawl through an opening.]
Tommy: They're gettin' through the fence! [He continues running.] Keep going! Find a way outta here! [Several runners climb over a nearby wall. Tommy runs toward the back door of a bar.] C'mon! Joel! [He opens and holds the door.] Move it!
[As Joel and Sarah run inside the bar, Tommy attempts to close the door, but the arms of runners keep him from closing it. He holds the door shut and faces Joel.]
Tommy: Get to the highway!
Joel: What?
Tommy: Go—you got Sarah! I can outrun 'em!
Sarah: Uncle Tommy?!
Joel: I will meet you there.
Tommy: Hurry!
[Joel and Sarah leave Tommy and exit through the front entrance of the bar. As Joel opens the door, Sarah screams. A runner attacks a civilian in front of them as a helicopter passes by overhead.]
Sarah: [Sobbing] Daddy, we can't leave him!
Joel: He's gonna be fine.
[Joel runs through an opening in the nearby wall onto a dirt trail that leads to the highway. The runner begins to chase them from behind.]
Joel: We're almost there.
Sarah: They're gettin' closer. [Pauses] Dad?
[The two pass an overturned ambulance as a second runner crawls out from beneath it. As they continue running down the path, the cinematic "Twenty Years Later" begins. Joel continues to carry Sarah in his arms as two runners chase after them. However, they are all startled by gunshots. Sarah screams, and the infected behind them fall, struck down by bullets.]
Joel: [Looks behind and then back at Sarah. Softly] It's okay, baby. We're safe. We're safe.
[The camera shows a FEDRA soldier, armed with an assault rifle and a mounted light in the distance.]
Joel: [Calling out] Hey! [Stands up] We need help—
Male soldier: Stop!
Joel: Please. It's my daughter. I think her leg is broken.
Male soldier: [Points gun. Demanding] Stop right there!
Joel: [Pauses] Okay… we're not sick.
Male soldier: [Using radio] Got a couple of civilians in the outer perimeter, please advise.
Sarah: Daddy, what about Uncle Tommy?
Joel: [Softly] We're gonna get you to safety and go back for him. Okay?
Male soldier: [Over radio] Sir, there's a little girl. [Hesitates] But— [Pauses and sighs] Yes, sir.
Joel: Listen, buddy, we've just been through hell. Okay, we just need—
[The soldier raises his gun and aims it directly at Joel and Sarah.]
Joel: Oh, shit…
[The soldier pulls the trigger. Joel quickly turns and is shot in the side. Sarah screams and is thrown from Joel's arms. They both roll to the ground as Joel groans in pain. The soldier hurries toward Joel and aims the gun at his head.]
Joel: [Holding side and weakly extending his other arm. Begging] Please, don't.
[The soldier is suddenly shot in the head and collapses. Tommy enters the scene with his revolver still drawn and sees Sarah whimpering.]
Tommy: Oh, no…
Joel: [Turns and crawls toward Sarah.] Sarah?! [She whimpers in pain.] Okay. Move your hands, baby. [Sarah grabs Joel's shoulder in pain.] I know, baby. I know… [Cringes] God! Listen to me, I know this hurts, baby. You're gonna be okay, baby. Stay with me. [Reaches down] All right, I'm gonna pick you up. I know, baby. I know it hurts. Come on, baby, please. I know, baby. I know.
[Camera pans to Tommy, who watches in horror. The camera pans back to Sarah, who gives her final breath and dies.]
Joel: Sarah… Baby… [Sniffles] Don't do this to me, baby. Don't do this to me, baby girl. Come on… [Begins crying] No, no… Oh no, no, no… Please. Oh, God. Please, please, please, don't do this. Please, God… [Continues crying as he cradles her lifeless body.]
[The The Last of Us/The Last of Us Part I original logo cuts to the screen as somber music plays. Opening credits appear with a montage of microscopic fungal growth in the background.]
