At some point Howard encountered David and joined his group of fellow Christian survivors. Among his responsibilities in the community was dispensing medical supplies.[1]

After being surprised by Ellie while inspecting the deer she had just killed, David made a deal with her to trade medicine in exchange for half the deer's meat. He sent James back to town with orders to get two bottles of penicillin and a syringe from Howard.[1]
