Jakarta is a minor location in HBO's The Last of Us. It is the capital city of Indonesia.[1]
History[]
Background[]
Jakarta was a flourishing, rapidly expanding city in the pre-apocalyptic world. It had cafes, flour mills, skyscrapers, medical centres and its own law enforcement, among many other buildings and services. It was one of the biggest grain and flour producers in the world, enabling it to supply food throughout the world. Mycologist Ratna Pertiwi lived and worked here after studying for and completing her degree at the University of Indonesia. Agus Hidayat also worked here as part of the Ministry of Defense and was connected with the local law enforcement.
Events of HBO's The Last of Us[]
In the week leading up to September 24th, 2003, workers in the large flour mill in Jakarta became infected with the Cordyceps brain infection. One worker transformed into a runner after receiving a bite from another worker and attacked four of her colleagues. The workers managed to lock her in a bathroom and called the police. When the police arrived, they tried to arrest the women but had to shoot her dead in self-defense. The three workers she attacked were then put into isolation and monitored by health officials, who witnessed them transform into runners as well. However, the Cordyceps still grew within their bodies over the coming days and the mill discovered a further fourteen workers had fallen ill and gone missing, all suspected to have contracted Cordyceps from the flour.
With concern growing, Agus was ordered to find and bring in Ratna, who was considered the best mycologist in the country. He eventually found her eating lunch at a local café. The man, with his associate, escorted her to the private laboratory and had her view a specimen taken from the now deceased woman. Ratna concluded that it was Ophiocordyceps Cordyceps, and the man informed her that it was transmitted from a human. She is skeptical, so they allow her to closely examine the infected woman; Ratna was horrified when she extracts tendrils from the woman's mouth. Later, while having tea, Agus informed Ratna about the missing workers, leading Ratna to claim there was no cure and that the only way to prevent the infection's spread was to have the military bomb the entire city, killing everyone inside. She then became emotional, asking to be taken home to her family.[1]
By the 26th of September, the situation in Jakarta became critical as several more people in the city contracted the infection and were hospitalized. The authorities tried to stop the spread, but it was too late - the infection, through airplane travel of infected citizens and shipments of tainted flour-based exports, spreading as far as the United States, leading to a worldwide infection outbreak.
