Joyce is a minor character in the first season of HBO's The Last of Us. She was a member of a group of cannibalistic survivors led by David.[1]
Biography[]
Background[]
Joyce was a survivor of the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak. She was married to Alec and had a daughter with him, Hannah. The three were religious Christians and eventually joined David's group of fellow Christian survivors sometime between 2017 and 2023. By 2023, after encountering raiders, the group settled in Silver Lake, Colorado.[1]
Events of HBO's The Last of Us[]
During the winter of 2023, David sent Alec and three other members of their group to search the University of Eastern Colorado for supplies. While at the former Fireflies' base, Alec was killed by Joel.[2] Alec's friends returned his body, where Joyce and Hannah mourned their loss during a funeral led by David. While he read from the Book of Revelation, Joyce held Hannah's hand and comforted her as she expressed her desire to bury Alec's body. When David remarked they had to wait until spring, Joyce accepted his words and even shook his hand when leaving the service afterwards.
That night, Joyce helped to serve food for the group, preparing it in the kitchen. When one of the members brought in meat from the butcher room, Joyce asked what type it was, the man claiming it was venison. However, Joyce was still unaware that the meat came from her husband, Alec. She then served the food up for the group, sitting with Hannah as they all waited for David to join them. During this time, word spread through the group that James and David had located Joel and his traveling partner, Ellie.
When David returned and remarked on his plans to take a hunting party out the following morning, Hannah interrupted, insisting he kill Joel and Ellie to avenge Alec. David went silent and approached Hannah, then struck her to the ground with a strike to the face. Hannah stood up but froze when David waved a hand at her, submitting to his desire to her not to help her own daughter. Joyce then watched as David helped Hannah up and insisted she and Joyce had a new "father" to follow - meaning himself as their pastor - and that she must never interrupt him. David then sat with Joyce and Hannah, the woman ensuring David got a larger portion of the food to eat with them.[1]
