No matter what anyone out there says or thinks... we're the only thing holding this all together.
―Captain Kwong[1]

Captain Kwong is a supporting character in the first season of HBO's The Last of Us. He is a FEDRA captain who ran the preparatory school in the Boston quarantine zone.[1]

Biography[]

Background[]

Before 2003, Kwong was married and had two daughters who he went to the carnival with on family days out.

Sometime after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak, Kwong was deployed to the Boston quarantine zone and was eventually placed in charge of the military preparatory school, training new FEDRA recruits. When trainees' broke rules during training, Kwong would hold disciplinary meetings with them and sentence them to time in the military containment facility (dubbed "the hole") as punishment. He lost his wife and children at some point but kept a picture of them on his desk in his office.

By the summer of 2023, he was still running the military school and was placed in charge of Bethany and Ellie. He found Ellie was a repeat offender, having to send her into confinement numerous times, though he took a liking to her. By his own admission, his status as an officer meant he did not go on patrol dealing with infected or fighting the Fireflies.[1]

Events of HBO's The Last of Us[]

In the summer of 2023, Kwong was informed that Ellie and Bethany had been fighting during a training session in the gym hall, learning Ellie had beaten Bethany so bad that she needed fifteen stitches. As a consequence, he confiscated her Walkman and made her go to his office.

Once he returned to his office, he confronted Ellie with her actions. The girl dismissed his initial statement, stating she was not bothered about him sending her into "the hole". Kwong then outlined two choices for Ellie. The first choice was she could continue to be disruptive and end up living a life as a grunt—condemned to do unfulfilling grunt work for FEDRA, bossed around by an abusive patrol leader all of her life before ending up getting shot by Fireflies or drinking herself to death while coping with her own insignificance. The second choice was for Ellie to follow his rules and graduate as an officer, securing a life where she could get her own room, the best food in the zone, never go out on patrol and get to boss the likes of Bethany around instead. Ellie then decided she would follow his rules, the man liking her choice. At Ellie's pressing, he allowed her to have her Walkman back to play with.[1]

Appearance[]

Kwong is a middle-aged man of Asian descent with short dark brown hair. He wore a FEDRA officer uniform.[1]

Personality[]

Kwong was a straightforward officer who spoke in absolutes, demonstrated in his ultimatum to Ellie. Despite his military background, he still understood children, displayed in his calm speaking towards Ellie. He also had a soft heart, gifting Ellie her Walkman back even though typical protocol meant he should keep it confiscated.[1]
