2009[]

Marlene: Oh, God...

Anna: It's not your fault.

Marlene: We were delayed getting out of the Zone. I--

Anna: She's hungry. She needs to be fed, and I-- I didn't wanna nurse her. I cut it before I was bit. Before. I want you to take her with you to Boston, find someone to bring her up and make sure that she's safe...

Marlene: I can't do that.

Anna: ...and I want you to give her this. Her name is Ellie.

Marlene: I can't...

Anna: How long have we known each other?!

Marlene: ...our whole lives.

Anna: So you pick her up, right now, and then you kill me.

Marlene: ...I can't kill you.

2023[]

[Joel is being led down the stairwell before he abruptly stops. A Firefly pushes him forward.]

Firefly: The fuck are you doing? Keep walking.

[Joel stumbles forward an inch, then stops again.]

Firefly: I said "keep walking"--

[Joel wrestles for the gun in the Firefly's hands and shoots his buddy before shooting the other Firefly in the kneecap.

Firefly: [pained groan] Fuck!

Joel: Where is she?

Firefly: Fuck you.

Joel: I don't have time for this.

[Joel shoots the Firefly and steals a radio from the guard lying on the stairs.]

Joel: Unhook her.

Jerry: How did you get in here?

Joel: I said unhook her.

Jerry: I won't let you take her.

Joel: Unhook her. MOVE!

[Marlene draws her sidearm and creeps up on Joel.]

Marlene: You can't keep her safe forever!

[Joel turns towards Marlene, who is pointing the gun at him.]

Marlene: No matter how hard you try, no matter how many people you kill, she's gonna grow up, Joel. And then you'll die, or she'll leave. Then what? How long 'til she's torn apart by Infected, or murdered by raiders? Because she lives in a broken world that you could have saved.

Joel: Maybe. But it isn't for you decide!

Marlene: Or you. So what would she decide, huh? 'Cause I think she'd wanna do what's right. And you know it. [She takes her aim off of Joel and puts her hands in the air.] It's not too late. Even now, even after what you've done... we can still find a way.

[Joel begins to think about her words, looking at the girl in his arms, then back to Marlene, despondent. The scene cuts to Joel driving down a highway, initially from his perspective before the camera cuts to look at him. After a long pause, a groan is heard in the back seat. Joel looks in the rear-view mirror. The camera cuts to Ellie waking up.]

Ellie: What--?!

Joel: It's alright. You're with me. Take it slow -- the drugs are still wearing off.

Ellie: I was with the Fireflies, and then I... What drugs?

Joel: They were running some tests on you... And some others. Turns out, there's a whole lot more like you. People that are immune. Dozens of 'em. And the doctors, they couldn't make any of it work. They've actually st—they've stopped looking for a cure.

[As Joel speaks to Ellie, scenes from his confrontation with Marlene at the hospital flash onscreen. They reveal Joel shooting her in the abdomen with a hidden pistol.]

Ellie: Where are my clothes?

Joel: Raiders attacked the hospital, I barely got you outta there. We'll find you some new ones on the way.

Ellie: Are people hurt?

Joel: ...yes.

Ellie: Is Marlene okay?

[Joel doesn't answer for a long beat.]

Joel: I'm taking us home.

[Ellie rolls on her side, no longer facing Joel.]

Joel: I'm sorry.

[The scene cuts back, focusing on the gun as Joel shoots Marlene. Joel then places Ellie in the back seat of a nearby SUV before going still as he hears Marlene grunt in pain. He shuts the door, stalking back to Marlene, who is bleeding out on the ground. He stops just in front of her, as she raises her arm.]

Marlene: God! Oh, no, wait! Wait, wait, wait! Please... Let me go.

Joel: You'd just come after her.

[Joel raises his pistol and shoots Marlene point blank in the head, killing her. The screen cuts to black as the shot rings out.]
