Nothing is known about Malick prior to the events of the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak. At some point, he began living in the slums outside of the Boston quarantine zone and became acquainted with Tess. He appears to be a smuggler or guard in the slums, mainly preventing others from reaching Robert's warehouse in Area 5.
Events of The Last of Us
During the summer of 2033, as Joel and Tess are passing through the Boston slums to reach Robert's warehouse, Malick stops Joel and blocks his path as he attempts to pass through a bus, causing Joel to consider fighting him. However, Tess arrives and simply tells him to sit down. Malick sheepishly does so, allowing Joel passage, with Tess mentioning that he is an "old headache."
Malick is a fair-skinned man who appears to be in his mid to late 20s and has brown hair and a light stubble. He wears a very dark grey or black baseball cap, and a dark grey shirt with a ragged, dirty white hoodie over it.
Malick and Tess are old acquaintances of each other. When he stands up and confronts Joel, Tess demands him to sit back down, which he sheepishly does so. This can indicate that Malick is familiar with Tess and her brutal, demanding reputation. After the confrontation, Tess mentions that he is an "old headache", implying he and Tess may not have worked well together or had some sort of relationship in the past that ended poorly.
As Joel and Tess make their way through the Boston slums to confront Robert, Malick stands up and stops in front of Joel, implying he isn't afraid to fight the man off if need be. He asks "Where do you think you're goin'?" in a harsh, demanding tone, suggesting he is not fond of strangers passing through the slums and perhaps has been hired to protect those near the warehouse entrance from unwanted guests.
- Malick: Where do you think you're goin'?
- Tess: Malick. Sit back down.
- Malick: Oh, sorry, Tess. Didn't realize you two were together. Go ahead.
