The Miller residence was Joel and Sarah Miller's home in Austin, Texas. It is featured in the first chapter, "Hometown", in The Last of Us.[1]

History[]

Outbreak day[]

Joel lived in this house with his only daughter Sarah in September, 2013 just outside the city of Austin, Texas. He came home late from work on September 26, waking Sarah, who had fallen asleep on the couch. He told her to go to bed but Sarah, noticing the time on the clock indicated the day was not over, presented him with a birthday gift: a repaired watch. Joel, while tired, appreciated the gift and thanked her for it. The two then watched some television before Sarah fell asleep again and Joel carried her to bed.

Later that night, Joel heard a disturbance next door at the Cooper residence. He left to investigate, where he was attacked by Jimmy Cooper, who had succumbed to the Cordyceps brain infection and transformed into a runner. Joel fought Jimmy's infected form off and fled back to his house. Concurrently, Sarah was awaken by a phone call from Joel's brother, Tommy Miller, who was panicked and on his way to the house, having learned the Cordyceps had transformed into a volatile outbreak. Sarah went downstairs, where she met Joel in the study room. Joel took out his personal revolver and aimed it at the back glass sliding door, where Jimmy had just smashed through. Jimmy charged at Joel, leading Joel to shoot him dead in self-defense. Joel then informed Sarah they had to leave the house as the neighborhood was not safe. Tommy then arrived and the Miller family fled the residence, heading towards the city.[1]

Post-outbreak[]

The house fell into disrepair over the years, with looters taking whatever supplies and valuables were left there and destroying much of the house. Sometime between 2028 and 2033, Tommy returned to the house to revisit the area that had once been his, his brother's and his niece's home. He tried to salvage what little of their personal belongings he could, unable to take much. However, he did find a picture of Joel and Sarah that, while faded, still looked in good condition.[2] He took this image and, eventually, returned it to his brother Joel by the Spring of 2034.[3]

Layout[]

The Miller residence had at least two floors, a garage and a back yard. On the second floor was Joel's room, Sarah's room and the bathroom. On the ground floor was their living room, kitchen, a study room and sliding doors that led out into their back yard.[1]
