Nolan Ramsey North (born October 31, 1970) is an American voice actor and actor who provided the English voice for David in The Last of Us. He was offered the role upon expressing interest in the game, his involvement elevating the character to be one significant importance in the game.
He also provided the voice of Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series (concluding the role with the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End) Desmond Miles from the Assassin's Creed series, Dr. Edward Richtofen from Call of Duty, Vossler in Final Fantasy XII, Penguin and KGBeast in Batman: Assault on Arkham, Green Lantern and Power Ring in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, Deadpool in various Marvel video games, Smokescreen in Transformers: Prime, and various other character voices in video games. However, The Last of Us marked the first time that he voiced an antagonist in a Naughty Dog game.
Nolan North claimed in 2015 that a sequel to The Last of Us was in development, which led fans to speculate as to whether or not David actually survived his fight with Ellie. However, North confirmed that, while he may or may not have a role in the sequel, David is indeed dead and not coming back. The sequel he referred to was revealed to be real, officially announced in December 2016.
The voice for David came as a challenge for North, as he wanted to use a voice that Nathan Drake wouldn't use. As such, he made an effort to find a voice “hopefully, a lot of people won’t know.” The moment he saw David’s concept art, he immediately thought of a voice that was “very quiet, and just you know, he’s not really sure and the voice can break a little.” Immediately, creative director Neil Druckmann believed that should be the voice.
