Note to brother is the third collectible artifact, and the fourth collectible overall, in The Last of Us. It is found during the "Beyond the Wall" section of the second chapter, "The Quarantine Zone".[1]
Description[]
A handwritten note on a sheet of notebook paper by a man named Mark that was left for his unnamed brother to find. Mark recounts how he and a few others—in an attempt to sneak into the Boston quarantine zone—were waiting for a smuggler to meet them on the outside of the wall. When they heard a military patrol approaching, they panicked and hid in a nearby building before noticing that it had contained Cordyceps spores that infected them. Mark bids farewell to his brother and explains that he hopes the smuggler will find the note to pass onto him.
Shortly before finding the note, Joel and Tess encounter the injured smuggler Mark planned to meet with, however, with a broken gas mask. He pleads to the pair to not let him turn, and Joel either kills him or lets him live to later turn into an infected. Afterwards, they come across Mark and his group members, who have succumbed to the infection and turned into runners. Joel decides to either kill them or sneaks past. As he finds the note unmoved, it is assumed that Mark's brother never read it.[1]
Acquisition[]
After entering the spore-infested tunnel and encountering the smuggler with a broken gas mask, Joel and Tess will enter an area with three runners (the first infected encounter for the player). Either kill them or sneak past and head upstairs to the second floor. Before dropping down to the outside through the hole in the wall, turn left and go through the closed door across the room. In the next room, on a table in the far left corner, will be the note along with a consumable health item.[1]
Be sure to pick up the artifact before dropping down to the outside, as the area is inaccessible after that.

- Hey Brother,
- We were so close. I'm sitting outside the walls knowing I'll never see the inside of the zone. While waiting for the smuggler to show up, we heard a squad of soldiers approaching. In our panic, we ducked into this building in hopes of hiding from them. None of us noticed the spores until it was too late. We're all infected - we have a few hours, maybe a day at most. I hope the smuggler is still coming so that I can at least pass this note to you.
- I should've listened to you and come to the zone with you when I had the chance. Now it's too late.
