Owen is a supporting character in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us. He is described as "a gentle soul trapped in a warrior's body, condemned to fight an enemy he refuses to hate."

Biography

Background and early life

Not much is known about Owen except that he joined the Fireflies before 2024 and befriended Abby, Mel, Nora and Manny.

Season 2

After Joel Miller's massacre of the Fireflies at St. Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Owen stayed behind for three days to tried to help some of the wounded. Despite his and his friends' efforts, they still died, and he and the others buried them a short walk from the hospital. While there grieving, the group laments their deaths and discuss tracking down Joel. Abby argues they should pursue Joel immediately, but Owen suggests joining a group fellow Firefly Ed had connections with. Abby insists she wants revenge, Owen proposing they join the group to gain a better lead on where Joel may have fled to, since he took their only working car anyway. Abby sits by one grave and places a Firefly pendant on it. She turns back to Owen and remarks that she wants to kill Joel slowly.

In the last few months of 2028, Mel became pregnant by Owen.

On New Years Eve, the final day of 2028, Owen and his friends make it to Jackson during a snowstorm. The group took shelter in a lodge for the night. Owen woke up early and went out on patrol an hour before the others rose. While there, he spotted how fortified Jackson was and speculated there were war veterans living there because of how pristine their patrols were. He returned to the lodge after an hour and informed the others. Despite his warnings, Abby was still forthright on finding Joel, so he claimed he was coming up with a plan. Abby then left to take watch, with Owen then revealing to us others his plan was to convince Abby to give up on her quest because he didn't believe they could handle how powerful the Jackson community were.

Later, Owen and the others went out looking for Abby when she didn't return. She reached them on horseback with a man and woman. Back inside the lodge, Owen get Abby extra blankets and moved to help the woman, whom Abby revealed was Dina but stopped when Abby revealed the man was Joel. Owen drew his rifle to stop Joel going for his gun and kept him at gunpoint until Abby shot Joel's leg out with a shotgun. He then watched at Abby tortured him but eventually grew uncomfortable, beginning to ask her to stop. Eventually, he moved to stop her himself only for Ellie to burst in, leading to a struggle. Owen helped Nora restrain her and even came to her defense when Manny moved to shoot her. Fearing other patrolmen would arrive, Owen told Abby to finish torturing Joel, the woman eventually killing him. Owen and the others then fled the lodge.

On Ellie's third day in Seattle, she visited the aquarium and found Mel and Owen. Mel and Owen were having an argument, and Mel disagreed with Owen backing up Abby. Ellie confronted them at gunpoint and ordered them to reveal Abby's location on a map. However, as Owen was seemingly complying, he grabbed a handgun hidden on a lower shelf and attempted to shoot Ellie, but her reaction time was quicker, with her shooting him with Joel's revolver through his neck. He collapsed to the floor, dying almost immediately. However, the bullet had passed through him and also hit Mel in the neck, as she was standing directly behind him. Mel collapsed, as well, and slowly bled to death.

Personality

Owen was an understanding man, respecting Abby's desire to want to kill Joel and supporting her in it. However, he was pragmatic, believing they shouldn't risk finding Joel if it meant endangering the group and actually planned to persuade Abby out of it. However, upon Abby bringing Joel to them, he helped Abby by holding him at gunpoint and didn't stop her torturing him. Although, he was uncomfortable with the extent Abby beat him, Owen even moving to stop Abby torturing him and protesting her actions, believing she went too far.

Abby Anderson

Owen is a close friend of Abby's, and he is shown to be concerned over her welfare, giving her advice on how to find Joel. He is also seen affectionately comforting Abby over her grief by touching her hand.

Mel

Mel was Owen's girlfriend, with whom he was going to have a child.
