The Play Like Ellie contest (Spanish: Concurso Play Like Ellie) was a musical cover contest held by PlayStation Latam to promote The Last of Us Part II. The contest ran from August 31 - September 13, 2020 and was open to residents of Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Guatemala, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico. Participants uploaded covers the of song "Cycles", composed by Gustavo Santaolalla for Part II, to Twitter for a chance to win various prices.[1]
Announcement[]
The contest was announced on the PlayStation Latam Blog on August 31 and promoted on Santaolalla's Facebook account on September 1.[1][2] The announcement featured a short video of Santaolalla, which was uploaded to his YouTube channel, in which he invites residents of Latin America to participate in the contest.[3]
Format[]
Participants would upload a video of their cover of "Cycles" to Twitter with the hashtags #ConcursoPlayLikeEllie, #PlayLikeEllieChallenge and, #TheLastOfUsPartII.[1] Participants also needed to follow and tag @Playstation_LA in their tweet. Submissions were required to be between 30 and 90 seconds in duration. Additionally, participants were allowed to submit multiple entries so long as each entry was unique. Judging was performed by a panel of Sony representatives and was based on the following criteria: 40% creativity, 30% enthusiasm, and 30% marketability.[4]
Winners[]
In Mexico, first place was awarded to Luis Daniel Acosta, second to Christopher Rodríguez García, and third to José Eduardo Arellano Chávez. In Argentina, first place was awarded to José Roberto Duarte, second to Maximiliano Martínez, third to Adriel David Juri, and fourth through sixth to Nicolás Agustín Pérez, Mauricio Manuel Canosa, and Joaquín Piovano, respectively. In Chile, first place was awarded to Sebastián Pérez, second to Mauricio Catalán, third to Lukas Ramos, and fourth through sixth to Joaquín Lillo, Cristóbal Danilo Díaz Araya, and Nacho Fernández, respectively. For the rest of Latin America, first place was awarded to Jonathan Quimbay Martínez, second to Iván de Jesús Pisquiy Escobar, and third to Kevin Enrique Moreta Alcívar.[5]
Prizes[]
In addition to the region-specific prizes listed below, all the 1st place winners also received a personalized message from Gustavo Santaolalla, and a compilation of the covers of these winners was published on Santaolalla's Instagram channel, as well as on the PlayStation Latam YouTube channel.[1][4]

Future Cover Contest[]
In his Facebook post, Santaolalla writes "It's only for Latin-America, but news for fans in other regions are coming up soon!".[2] And in the description of the YouTube announcement video, Santaolalla writes "This contest is only valid in Latin-America but hey, North America and Europe, heads up because we'll soon have a contest for you".[3] However, as of July 2022, no other The Last of Us themed musical cover contests have been held except for the Through the Valley Cover Challenge which was held several months before Play Like Ellie and which wasn't associated with Santaolalla.
