Background[]
The Ranchland Inn is located across the river from the suburbs of Kansas City. It once functioned as a motel sometime up until 2003. After the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak, it fell into disuse, and by 2023 it was abandoned.
Events of HBO's The Last of Us[]
In September, 2023, Joel, Ellie, Henry and Sam sought refuge here after escaping a Infected horde that killed many members of the Kansas City resistance. The group slept in separate rooms, with Joel and Henry discussing reaching Joel's brother Tommy in Wyoming while Ellie and Sam read a Savage Starlight comic together.
However, Sam turned into an infected during the night. By morning, he attacked Ellie. With little choice, Henry shoots Sam to save her. Sam's death broke his spirit, leading Henry to kill himself in the inn. Joel and Ellie buried the brothers outside the inn before leaving the area later that day.[1]
