St. Mary's Hospital
Two years earlier, Ellie returns to St. Mary's Hospital to seek answers about the Fireflies and the development of the vaccine. Going through rooms of old medical and research equipment, Ellie found medical documents and x-rays photos of the Cordyceps Brain Infection in the brain of an immune patient. Scavenging through the surgery room, Ellie finds a duffle bag with a tape recorder. Ellie plays a voice recording of a remaining Firefly, identifying that Ellie was the only immune patient available and that producing the vaccine is impossible, since the only doctor capable of such a feat has been murdered.
Ellie repeatedly plays the recording of the Firefly outside the hospital until Joel arrives. While Joel attempts to bring Ellie back to Jackson, Ellie confronts Joel on the truth of what really happened at the hospital five years ago. Ellie further states to Joel that if he is going to lie once more, the two will part ways forever. Joel hesitantly tells Ellie that producing the vaccine would kill her, causing him to stop the surgery. This causes Ellie to break down. As Joel tries to console Ellie, Ellie angrily pushes Joel away. Ellie says that she is willing to go back to Jackson with Joel, but sever their ties.
