The Shotgun, also referred to as a Pump Shotgun, is a weapon that appears in The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II. It belongs to the long guns group.

Overview

The Shotgun is a long gun that appears in The Last of Us and its multiplayer portion, Factions MP. The ability to use it as a melee weapon is present in the game, but it can only be done when not wielding another melee weapon and only works once.

The Last of Us

Singleplayer

The Shotgun is first given to Joel by Bill during the chapter "Bill's Town", during the quest to find the crashed military truck at the high school. After reaching Bill's cellar, Bill gives Joel a shotgun and takes one as well, and uses it as his primary weapon for the rest of the chapter.

During the chapter "Lakeside Resort", Ellie can take a shotgun off of one of the Cannibals she kills. However, she soon loses it when David recaptures her.

Factions MP

The Shotgun is a powerful weapon in multiplayer, being much more powerful per shot than the other buckshot options: the Shorty, Tactical Shotgun, and the Double Barrel. It is capable of breaking body armor in one direct hit and downing a player if unarmored when used in close range. At point blank and near-point blank ranges, the shotgun can down armored opponents in a single hit. Despite the fact that it is pump-action, the Shotgun also boasts a fast fire rate that beats out all the other buckshot weapons. Arguably, only the Burst Rifle and the Flamethrower can compete with the shotgun at close range.

The shotgun is capable of achieving headshots, resulting in extra parts being rewarded for them. However, there is no additional damage given for headshots, which makes aiming for the head unnecessary in most scenarios.

One major downside of the shotgun when compared to its other close range options is cost; It is one of the most expensive weapons in the game. Costing four loadout points and 400 parts, it is a significant investment to equip one. Ammunition for it is also expensive as the initial price for two rounds is 480 parts. Aside from its cost, it also has relatively limited ranged capabilities, thus relegating its use to close quarters combat.

Because of these issues, one might consider using the Specter instead, as it is slightly cheaper than the Shotgun and is still effective in close quarters thanks to its high fire rate and stealth capabilities. The Double Barrel also serves as a good alternative to the Shotgun as it is cheaper and downs enemies in two shots.

Trivia

  • The Shotgun is based on the pump-action Mossberg 500AT, which fires 12-Gauge cartridges in the game. However, this shotgun can also be chambered in 20-Gauge and .410-Bore.
    • The Shotgun in Part II is based off of the Remington 870, as evident by the lack of a thumb safety on the rear of the receiver.
  • A shotgun with the stock removed was seen in some promotional artwork, but it is not present in the first game.
  • In Factions MP, the Shotgun has the second highest damage output and is the most mobile out of all the weapons, after the Military Sniper.
  • In the singleplayer campaign, it is the only other weapon, along with the 9mm Pistol, that is automatically acquired through normal gameplay progression. All other weapons used by Joel need to be picked up from killed enemies or at predetermined locations, and as such, can be missed.
  • Joel racks the pump on the shotgun after reloading, even when the gun has a round already chambered.
  • In The Last of Us Part II, when Ellie adds the extended magazine tube there is no spring inside the tube, which is necessary to feed the shells into the chamber.
