Epilogue[]

Ellie stands outside the farm, her two missing fingers now stitched up and once again wearing Dina's lucky charm bracelet. She walks up to the house, finding it decaying from the outside and the fields deserted of the sheep and hay that once filled them.

She enters the house, finding it just as bare as outside. It is clear Dina and JJ have not lived here in some time. She wanders around and eventually makes her way upstairs and enters her drawing room, the only room in the house that still has items within: her Savage Starlight comics and posters, her drawings of Dina and JJ, and Joel's guitar.

She opens the case and takes the guitar out. She sits by the window and attempts to play Future Days. However, her two missing fingers make it impossible to play some of the chords, leading her to cease playing. She then looks out the window and begins thinking about her memory of Joel she had at the beach while drowning Abby Anderson.

The scene then flashes back to moments after Ellie's confrontation with Seth at the dance in Jackson. Joel sits outside of his house playing the guitar when Ellie stops by. He stands up, setting his guitar down and leans against the railing with Ellie, drinking coffee. Joel explains he got coffee from nearby travelers and asks if Ellie and Dina are dating, expressing support if they are. However, Ellie shouts back, cursing him for having stolen her chance to redeem humanity through dying. To this, Joel affirms that, if God gave him a second chance, he would do the same thing again. Despite her anger, Ellie finally admits she would be willing to forgive Joel. Just as tears begin to roll down his face, Ellie leaves after suggesting they may try to rebuild their relationship.

Back in the present, Ellie sits thinking about that memory. She decides to place Joel's guitar by the window and leaves the house. The camera then pans up close to the guitar's fretboard, focusing on the moth motif on it as Ellie walks from the farm in the background. The music then swells up. The screen cuts to black. The credits roll. The game ends.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The last shot in this level, Ellie walking from Joel's guitar as the camera zooms in on the fretboard with a moth insignia on it, mirrors the first shot of the game in the prologue, where Joel cleaned the guitar, intent on gifting it to Ellie. There, the guitar symbolized Ellie inheriting Joel's traits whereas here it symbolizes her leaving Joel and her connection to him behind.
  • The flashback of Joel playing the guitar appeared as a vision in the "The Beach" level from "Santa Barbara".
