The Farm[]

Several months after the events of Seattle, Ellie is in a farmhouse inspecting Joel's watch. She then hears a baby crying: it is JJ, the son of Jesse and Dina. Ellie picks him up and cheerfully carries him around the house and the outside area. Together they sit on a tractor, admiring a majestic sunset, with Ellie telling him she wants to teach him how to play guitar when he is older. The two return to the house and Ellie starts playing a record, and together with Dina, the happy family dances.

Once they finish dancing, Dina asks Ellie to herd the sheep while she finishes the laundry. Ellie, along with JJ, herds all the sheep into the barn, but one sheep gets out and hides behind some tools. The sheep knocks over a shovel, and the clanking sound triggers Ellie's post-traumatic stress disorder, giving her a hallucination of Joel's death. She screams, which causes JJ to start crying. Dina rushes in and calms the pair down.

Some time later, Ellie is hunting in the nearby woods. As she returns to the house, she notices a horse near the porch and wonders who might be visiting. She enters the house and finds Tommy Miller, missing an eye and with several scars across his face, holding JJ and commenting on how much he has grown. He stands to return JJ to Dina and limps towards Ellie to hug her. He then reveals he and Maria Miller have mutually separated. Tommy pulls out a map and tells Ellie he has been putting out feelers, and has tracked Abby Anderson's whereabouts to Santa Barbara, California. Dina declares to Tommy that they are done with chasing after Abby, while a conflicted Ellie gazes at the map. Despite Tommy's pleas, Ellie says she cannot go through with looking for Abby again. Tommy grows angry, chiding Ellie for not keeping her promise following their return to Jackson that Abby would pay for what she did. Feeling betrayed, Tommy storms out the house as Dina chastises him.

That night, Ellie struggles to sleep and feels a chill blowing through the house. She heads downstairs to close a window, and sees Joel's guitar. As she begins to play it, she recalls the events of the community party that occurred the night before Joel's death. At the party, Dina and Ellie dance together and have their first kiss, the sight of which greatly upsets Seth. Joel comes to Ellie's defense, but she criticizes him for it, leading him to walk away, dejected.

In the present, Ellie decides the only way to gain closure is to find and kill Abby, and she packs her belongings. Before she can leave, Dina catches her in the kitchen, who tearfully begs Ellie to move on and help take care of their family. Ellie tells her she cannot keep living the way she has been, but reaffirms her love for her. Dina remains adamant against pursuing Abby, so Ellie departs the farm without her.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Living on a peaceful farm was alluded to earlier in the game, during Ellie and Dina's first day in Seattle. While looking for gas in the downtown area, Dina mentions her desire to fix up a farm outside of Jackson, and Ellie seemed open to the idea.
  • While walking through the house at night, players can view Ellie's journal in her drawing room, which discusses some of her personal struggles in the aftermath of the events that took place in Seattle.
