Development[]

On June 24, 2024, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann teased that a potential third season would be "significantly larger" than season 2, and added that a fourth season may be required in order to tell the full story.[5] It was reported on December 5, 2024, that the series had been renewed for a third season.[6] On April 9, 2025, HBO officially announced the third season.[2] As of April 2025, Mazin had not begun writing the third season, stating he intended to start once the second season had aired.[7] Catherine O'Hara, who portrayed Gail Lynden in the second season, confirmed in a May 2025 interview that the third season would focus on Abby, describing it as "the Abby story."[8]

Filming[]

The season reportedly began filming in summer 2025 in Vancouver, British Columbia, under the production title Mega Sword.[9][10] Production List revealed the season would begin filming on June 30, 2025, at the Bridge Studios in Burnaby, British Columbia.[11][12] In May 2025, when asked when she would begin filming for the third season, Isabela Merced responded that she believed it would be in 2026, saying "it should be next year."[13]
