The reason for that is because Resident Evil (in my opinion) has been awful since 2005. Resident Evil 4 isn't a bad game in general, but its move towards shooting basically massacred the whole genre, and made what began as a defining saga, become altered into a blockbuster Hollywood franchise instead. The same thing also kind of happened with Silent Hill. And I do not believe that some horror gaming franchises should have went that route, just for the money. But sadly, maybe they would have died over time anyway. Games have to make money, or companies will either go out of business, or see no need to invest in developing further entries, when the latest one is met with poor sales, and, or less critical acclaim than expected.
When I look at what Capcom has been doing for over a decade, all I see is a shell of what it was back in the good old days of the PlayStation and PS2. Now they resort to doing remakes, and the odd sequel that just copies other trends. I've also been unimpressed with the series in years because the story is too messed up, yet on other forums like NeoGAF, the users there always say crap like, "the story has always sucked" - which is not true at all.
The Last of Us, however, made me realize there's still great horror games out there to buy. The same with The Evil Within. But what if Naughty Dog went stupid and made the series go as lame as Resident Evil is these days, someday, after the franchise grows so large? What if one day, it got so huge, that we had awful spin off games, card games, mobile apps, and all that? This is why I think that Naughty Dog should not sell out like Capcom did. While Capcom still make a ton of cash with games like Resident Evil 5, the more action heavy entries are why I went off caring about the series. I'd hate for this to happen with Naughty Dog, but so many franchises over the years that people loved, got destroyed through greediness. In fact, I'm still posting on a few Silent Hill forums, yet few people have stuck around.
