Waverly Township is a location in The Last of Us. It was a township that is a part of the suburbs on the outskirts of Pittsburgh.[1]
History[]
Background[]
Shortly after the Cordyceps brain infection outbreak occurred, Waverly Township descended into chaos. Initially, residents boarded up their houses, hoping to wait out the crisis. However, as time passed and food supplies dwindled, the residents began turning on each other.[1] The Carsons, Kara, Kyle, Susan, and numerous other families found themselves fighting against looters daily.[2][3]
Concurrently, Ish returned to the mainland with his fishing boat[4] and lived among Pittsburgh's sewers.[5] Seeking company, he eventually invited Danny,[6] Susan, Kyle, their children, and numerous others living within the Pittsburgh suburbs to join him, safe from infected and looter attacks.[7] The families accepted his offer.[2] The community soon grew to about fifty residents. They were very organized, having a code of conduct, rain catchers, shower stalls, and a school. They kept animals, as evidenced by several small cages found throughout the settlement.[8]
However, after several years living in peace, Ish's community faced an infected horde attack after a resident failed to secure the doors. Kyle and some of the children were trapped in a classroom, and opted to commit suicide.[9] Ish, Susan, and a few of the children escaped into Waverly Township,[10] but had fled from the area by 2033.[11]
Meanwhile, in the main city of Pittsburgh, residents had been living under FEDRA and military rule and became discontent with it. They rebelled, killing the soldiers, and took control over the city.[11] They then made efforts to expand their control outside the city center, as when several groups of hunters invade and take control of areas within Waverly Township.[1]
Events of The Last of Us[]
In the Summer of 2033, Joel Miller, Ellie Williams, Sam and Henry fled into Waverly Township to escape the hunters within Pittsburgh. They traveled through the remnants of Ish's community, killing numerous Stalkers along the way before entering the suburbs. Once there, the hunters living there confronted the group with a military sniper rifle, and later the Humvee from before. The group successfully fended them off, but later was forced to flee from the horde of infected attracted by the sounds of the fight.[1]
